Small city walkable from the port area. Free internet in several locations along the nice waterfront area and in the town. People were very friendly and helpful. There was a small outside market the day we were there - closes down early.

If you drive north out of Perth along the coast, you'll find a seemingly unending stretch of bushland punctuated by small towns until you reach the northern border of this solitary continent. Geraldton is the biggest (I think) of these coastal towns. It is a city that seems to have grown up without realizing it. It has a country-town feel but without the country-town charm. It isn't a vacation destination, but might be worth a stop. There are some pretty nice beaches, including the lovely foreshore area. There are some cute boutique-style shops and a smattering of restaurants. The museum is worth a look. So if you are making your way north, consider spending a few hours and a night here; enough to see the museum, shop for Abrolhos pearls, and stroll the foreshore before tucking into some fish and chips. Though I haven't been there, I hear great things about the Abrolhos Islands, for which Geraldton is the gateway.
