Who knew that the largest Finnish population in the world outside of Finland was in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Superior? Not me. Not even my boyfriend, who is Finnish. We took a sailing trip out of Thunder Bay, stopping in the city to eat Finnish pancakes, buy Finnish licorice, and visit places with actual Finnish saunas. My boyfriend got to have about three conversations in Finnish, a rarity outside of Finland. The town is fascinating -- a 20-hour drive from Toronto, it used to be known as the hinge of Canada because of being the meeting point for transportation and shipping options. It was much hipper than I'd thought it might be; there were several extremely good restaurants and the Subpop band Supersuckers were playing at a club while I was there. If you end up here, you'll be well, well off the tourist radar.
