Not a patch on the Lourenco Marques of old - it is now filthy, run-down and it's not uncommon to have pavement meals with a beggar on your right and an guard with an AK47 on your left... but it still holds a certain fascination... possibly sentimental on my part.

I loved Maputo. It won't appeal to many people but it is my favorite city so far in sub-Saharan Africa. There is grit and corruption but its seaside location, fascinating history, good architecture, delicious fusion cuisine and cultural diversity make it really special. It isn't as beautiful as Cape Town but it has a depth and cultural complexity that I found far more enthralling.

Read about my perception of the city here:

Maputo has been cool for years now, but for most, it will be too expensive for them before they even hear about it. Basic hotels in the capital already charge about US$ 200 a night. The prices in Maputo are now just as likely to bring tears as the poverty.
