This is a super strange place. The site of a old very lucrative gold mine, the mining company left a pine tree farm to the people when it pulled out. Currently families are trying to extract remaining veins, and lacing the rivers with mercury. The month before I visited in 2010, tribes surrounding the area had formed an alliance, and decended on the mainly Sepik people working the tree farm, scorching their homes to the ground and killing an unknown amount of them. The works were all in a very insufficent internally displaced people's camp, being given a kilo of rice for every eight people once a week (according to them). Rough place.
