The first place I visited in SE Asia and a great place to start a trip hopping through SE Asia. Locals really enjoy visitors, tourism is actually built into building their economy back up. A lot of local history to be seen that most don't even know went on in Cambodia. Temples, the Genocide Killing Fields (although sad you can learn a lot about Cambodian history there), and great places to eat.
The drinks are cheap. There's a dedicated tuck tuck all day. Me Mate's Place has wifi, geckos and it's damn cheap!
Great community and the locals are friendly. Pretty pricey for the tourists actually. You'll need to have great bargain skills to keep costs low.
Cambodia's largest city which rests on the banks of the Mekong has a special appeal about it . . . an appeal that is chotic, colorful and to me romantic. This is a place that has not been over "westernized" yet like so many Asian cities have. I love the crazy sort of "wild west feeling" of the place. The traffic with the thousands and thousands of motor scooters, the spirited markets, the remains of old French colonial buildings. There are some most see highlights; the Royal Palace with it's Khmer designed roofs, the National Museum, and sadly the Tuel Sleng Museum of Genocide. This is one of the buildings ( a former high school) where the Kymer Rouge created their horrific actions. A very sobering hard experience but important to see,
