Santiago de Cuba is the second-largest city in the country and birthplace of the Cuban Revolution. This where traditional dancing, el Son, got its start and where a big majority of the Afro-Cuban community resides. An evidence of that are the higher numbers of Santeria initiates, all wearing white clothing. Some of Cuba's most famous musicians, including Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Eliades Ochoa were born here, all of whom participated in the Buena Vista Social Club. On January 1st 1959, Fidel Castro proclaimed the victory of the Cuban Revolution from a balcony on Santiago de Cuba's city hall. The city itself is a commercial hustle and bustle like none other in Cuba, its main avenues flanked by vendors on one side or the other selling various items from the entrances of their buildings.
I suggest you try the restaurant La Careta when you visit this city and watch the sunset from the Hotel Casa Grande's roof terrace sipping their delicious Pina Colada.
what an exciting city...filled with artwork...and lots of dance companies
I go back in a heartbeat!!
