This is the town where the French escape and vacation. It's a nice port city, with lots of restaurants and bars lined along the port, boat tours and rentals to go on excursions, shops for beach and lounge wear, and beautiful clear blue waters all around. It doesn't take too long to walk from end to end. It gets really hot and humid in the summer.
Lucky me! I was "stuck" in Bonifacio for a day when I mistakenly put sans piomb in my diesel rental car. Mon Dieu! (pardon my French). Bonifacio is a walled town, inhabited since prehistory perched on white cliffs across the strait just a short ferry ride from Italian Sardinia. The old walled city is up on a hill overlooking the sea. My car was drained by a garage at the bottom of the hill near the port. I walked up the many stairs to the old town and enjoyed a day of fabulous views, shopping in boutiques, and lunching on Niçoise salad. In the last hour of waiting for my restored car at sea level I wandered around the port. If you have a chance to visit, don't pass it up. You can take the ferry there for a day trip from Sardinia. If you drive there's parking at the bottom and top of the hill.
Le plus bel endroit de France (plage du petit sperone)
One of my favorite cities in France!
