Xela is a pretty large city in the middle of the mountains. It's pretty cool here on a regular basis. There are a few spots for gringos and other than that, go with a local or a tour guide to stay safe and learn about the city. It's definitely not a luxurious location. But I'd go back in a heartbeat to show loved ones this town.
Guatemala's 2nd city, Quetzaltenango (also known by its indigenous name, Xela) would hardly be described as beautiful, but it has a charm all its own. Best used as a base for trekking in the surrounding mountains and volcanoes, or for those looking to study Spanish without the distracting glut of English speakers in Antigua. In a country as small as Guatemala, it's certainly worth a visit while you do the circuit.
Guatemala's second city is much more charming (and safe) than the capital. A good base to organize treks and volcano hikes. "Xela," as it is more commonly known, is also home to many language schools and is a great place to spend a few months studying and volunteering with an organization like TRAMA, which trains physically abused women to make crafts so they can leave their abusive partners without worrying about finances. Even if you're just passing through, stop by their shop and pick up some shawls, table runners, wall hangings, etc. to support their work.
