Now a world heritage site with UNESCO its easy to see why. This city is literally carved out of the rock with the houses and smart boutique hotels actually contained within its many caves this place is famous for. However, it wasnt long ago that people were living here in poverty without running water or electricity.Thankfully its now a thriving bustling town which has completely been transformed. Although a little further afield (1.5 hrs away( its still one of Puglias top tourist destinations.
No words to describe this masterpiece. A city built on different layers, with the caves as original first houses. The only way to understand how beautiful it is would be visiting.
Visit the Cave homes of Matera (1hr 40mins away) where until the 1950's 16000 people still lived in with their livestock. Read 'Christ stopped at Eboli' by Carlo Levy. Nowadays these ancient homes are being relived in. Its worth paying for a guide who will take you to caves you would not normally see. On the other side of the mountain are the churches in grottoes. Absolutely fascinating.
Ancient city with dwellings built right into the caves. These dwellings are 5000 years old. Matera also is known as the "shame of Italy" for another set of dwellings. Worth researching. Today there is much renovation changing this tale of two cities.
