A beautiful port town with a walkable downtown, gorgeous views of the sea, and charming restaurants, shops, and sights throughout. It's about 40 minutes from Santander by car and about one hour and 15 minutes by train or bus. Be sure to walk up to see the castle and church that offer views of everything surrounding the town. Make sure to stop into any of the little restaurants to try some local fish, shrimp, squid, or (my favorite) anchovies.
Gayle and I had a too brief visit to San Vicente De La Barquera one afternoon as we were driving down the Atlantic Coast after a visit to the Altamira Caves. I remember the drive across the long bridge over the river estuary (Puente de la Maza), the Camino Santiago signs (Northern Route), the scenic water view and on the other side, the Picos de Europa in the distance. This Town was once important as a Roman port and is one of the oldest maritime settlements in Northern Spain.
