A lot of spooky fun around the Halloween, just make sure to book any haunted events well in advanced because they tend to book up FAST.
The lower Hudson Valley is a unique region of the United States; it's Dutch America. The names of the towns along Metro North-Scarsdale, Spuyten Duyville--are relics of that 40 year period when the Dutch held sway here. Sleepy Hollow is probably the most famous town around. The town gave its name to Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," one of the first important works of American fiction. Irving, himself, is buried in the graveyard. You can also check out Phillip's Manor, a Dutch mill and trading post that has been preserved from colonial times.
This is a fun place to go for Halloween, but beware, not the legend, but the number of people who have the same idea! Book everything you can far in advance, things fill up quickly. It's an easy place to walk around and has a festive flair around H time. There was a good sushi place there (can't remember the name, but it was, I think, the only sushi place in town in 2011). If you're going with children, make sure you bring snacks - it took a while to find the sushi place, and all the other diners, coffee shops and pizza places on main street were full at dinner time with waits of 20 minutes. A really fun place to visit on Halloween, though it's got a mill (still working! You can buy ground corn meal and stuff at the store) and other buildings that are historically significant, so it's probably an interesting place to visit year-round. A short train ride on Metro North, it's a good place to day trip to from NYC.
