This is a must. I believe "old" Cairo is also "Coptic" Cairo. Please correct me if I am wrong. I love the history of this area. Places that are so old and buried with centuries of sand still stand. Places that the bible mention.

A formal tour of Cairo revealed lovely tourist areas, sumptuous restaurants and hotels, fascinating and wonderful antiquities at the famous museum with King Tut and thousands of other antiquities. Fabulous history, monumental exhibitions of amazingly beautiful historic artifacts. Our guide took us through mosques that were ornate, costly, and huge. The artistry of the people is simply amazing. Our guide, and other guides - both men and women - were well dressed in western clothing, sporting high-end labels such as Dolce & Gabanna, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger. They are clearly an elite group.

The informal tour follows:

Unquestionably the most impoverished, saddest, brokendown rubble filled, dirty, antiquated city I have ever seen. Our city guide constantly tried to put a good face on the city, but it was clear he was required to avoid the truth. Unfinished ugly high-rise ghettos were strewn with rocks, dirt piles, rubble and garbage of every kind at ground level. The exteriors of many of these old apartment buildings were draped with interwoven electric lines, with occasional rickety old window air conditioners barely hanging onto windows dotted around the buildings.

Rebar spikes stuck up from the top of unpainted, unadorned, old, dirty, ill-repaired apartment buildings, and the official reasons for the unfinished state and lack of repair is "to save taxes". The storyline is that when the tax assessor comes, the inhabitants want to appear to be unfinished so as to be assessed a partial levy that is substantially less than would be levied on a "finished" building.

Everywhere, clotheslines strung across shambles of balconies, with dirty, rusted, mangled old furniture and metal carcasses of old equipment lying on balconies. Nowhere was there a live plant, a tree, a painted building, a parking garage, an area of quiet and comfort. The entire length of the city tour was block after block after block of old, ugly, tattered, worn, unbelieveable shabbiness. It was worse than sad.

Sidestreets revealed battered metal overhead doors, some partially open to cavelike dwellings, some with dirt floors, where furniture could be seen arranged in living patterns, with children hunching down around doorways and cooking smells lingering with the smell of something being smoked, perhaps mens' pipes.

A mixture of battered old beat up automobiles from the fifties and sixties, alongside horses with battered wooden carts, traversed the streets. Some carts were piled high with fruit, one with watermelons, pulled by heaving horses foaming at the mouth. The brutality of it was breathtaking.

Many police were in evidence, located in little kiosks at corners of streets, walking two and three abreast with metal shields held in front of their bodies as if ready for battle. Most women were dressed in black, all of them in full chador or hijab, some with tiny spaces for peeking out to see, others with the full faces uncovered. The black skirts of these tunics were typically water and dirt stained up to about 12" from the hem, with wiggly lines of whitish material outlining the area where water capillaried up the fabric. Children were typically well dressed, an amazing contrast. A few men wore striped and dark colored tunics, but most men were in western dress. The streets were dirty, lined with hovels, peppered with men sitting at dirt strewn sidewalk eateries; and all around a lot of people walking in every direction, cars and trucks vying for space on the road and jockeying into parking spaces. The roadways are narrow, tight spaces, and the areas were crowded throughout our tour. Clearly these are people who mingle. And they stared at our vehicle as we passed by, never smiling, never waving. I had the feeling they hate wealthy interlopers and do not wish us well. This was several months prior to the Hosni Mubarak uprising.
