A former leper colony and fort, to get the most out of this haunting island I'd recommend a tour as it provides you with some fascinating context. Otherwise, you can just explore it on your own especially if you've read Victoria Hislop's "The Island."

The Historic Island of Spinalonga, Greeks, Venetians, Turks, have all fought over this small Island situated in the opening of the inlet to the bay of Elounda. Very historic. It was in the end used as a leper colony and closed in 1957 the last colony in Europe after they found the cure. Onassis the shipping magnate reputably wanted to buy it and turn it into a casino, Thank goodness they didn't let him. You can get boats from the harbor in Elounda or Plaka. Entrance 8 euro.

Explore the ruins of SPINALONGA Island, which is located northeastern of the Elounda resort. It was the setting where the bestseller “The Island” by Victoria Hislop was shot. Spinalonga Island is easily accessed by boat from Elounda and the small village of Plaka. Spinalonga is an island fortress on the southwestern entrance in the Gulf of Elounda. After 1904, Spinalonga was used as a gathering point and refuge for Cretans suffering from leprosy, until 1957, where the hospital shut down as a cure of leprosy was discovered. Spinalonga is now a recognized archaeological site, and constitutes an identified historical grouping, one of the few examples of Venetian fortifications and fortress-building in Eastern Mediterranean.

SPINALONGA ISLET
Spinalonga is a small island located at the entrance of Elounda lagoon and north of the Gulf of Mirabello.
The history of the island still inspires awe. It has been a Venetian fortress, a castle colony, a rebel refuge, a place of exile for lepers, a communication link with Cairo during the Second World War. The island has been well fortified by the Venetians during their presence in Crete. From structural and architectural point of view and from an aesthetic view of the whole landscape, the island still retains an unsurpassed beauty.
Its original name was Calydon, but the Venetians named it Spinalonga from the Venetian word Spina-Longa, which means long thorn. According to a second weaker interpretation, Spinalonga derives its name by paraphrasing "StinElounda”, meaning “In Elounda”. Another, version tells that the island got its name from a beautiful woman named Longa that was living in the fort.
THE LEPER COLONY
In 1903, the Cretan State gathered all lepers who lived in settlements and moved them to Spinalonga. Thus, the island became a leper colony for the Cretan patients of Hansen's disease, known as leprosy. Initially, lepers were brought from Crete and, later, from all over Greece.
A story full of pain, screams and death would conquer the island for half a century. Initially the lives of lepers were miserable. Spinalonga was a vast slum, a cemetery for lepers, without any organization, without medication for the sicks, without hope.
Later, Leper Hospital upgraded. It had a director, a doctor, nurses, caretakers, cleaners, financial service and priest. The lepers resided in the Turkish community houses and in modern buildings constructed in the 30s. Large parts of the Venetian walls were destroyed in 1939, with dynamite, in order to open up the perimeter road that currently exists on the islet. After the establishment of the leper colony, residents from the opposite coast, built the present village of Plaka, just opposite Spinalonga, so as to serve the leper colony.
Ιn 1957, with the discovery of antibiotics and after all lepers were cured, the leper colony closed and the island was deserted. The last inhabitant, a priest, left the island in 1962. This was to maintain the religious tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church, in which buried persons have to be commemorated 40 days, 6 months, 1, 3 and 5 years after their death.
After 1957 and for several decades, the island remained abandoned. With the raised interest of many tourists, the local authorities started in 70s to systematically repair and renovate old buildings, fortifications of the Venetian walls, old houses and roads, and tore the buildings of the hospital down. Since then, works for improving the condition of buildings on Spinalonga, have never stopped.
Today the castle and the castle of Spinalonga is preserved, in its most part, in good condition and the island is considered one of most important remaining strongholds in the Mediterranean sea.
Over 300,000 visitors each year visit this charming island by boat, starting from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka, which is just 800 meters away. This number brings the island in the first five Byzantine / post-Byzantine archaeological sites in Greece.
In 2005, the author Victoria Hislop wrote a gripping novel about Spinalonga, titled "The Island", which won the British Book Award of Newcomer of the Year 2007. The book has dominated for 24 weeks in the British top 10 and has been translated into over 15 languages, making Spinalonga and its history known throughout the world.

Spinalonga is mainly known as the Leper Island. In 1903,a leper colony was established on Spinalonga,to isolate people suffering from Hansen’s Disease from the healthy population.Lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece were quarantined there until 1957.The award winning and best selling book" The Island"by Victoria Hislop is set on the island and shares the fictional story of a family's ties to the former leper colony.A walk around Spinalonga–with some of the finest views of the clear blue waters that surround the island will guide you through the pages of the novel.Strolling around the island takes about an hour but the serenity of the place and the remnants of its recent history will certainly tempt you into spending much longer.A left turn by the old town hall takes you down to the beautiful seafront;take advantage of the opportunity to take some time for a swim here.
