Built during the Ming Dynasty and used for rites performed by the Emperor (known as the son of Heaven) for good harvest. Tiantan Park is a must-see attraction when you are in Beijing. You can walk around the complex of ancient buildings and also see old Chinese people singing songs and playing chess.

Completed during the Ming dynasty, the temple of heaven is one of the largest temple in China. It’s a UNESCO site due to the wood pillars inside. It was here that the emperor would make sacrifices and pray to heaven during winter solstice. The park around it attracts people playing chess and cards.

Similar to most of the other beautiful historical sights in China. Lots of open space for picnics or just a nice walk to clear your head

One of my favorite place in Beijing.
You can see Chinese people doing gymnastic, dancing, playing, doing martial arts... That’s very lively and impressive. You can also find some green to lai on.

As you come into the complex there is a park where there are all sorts of people exercising on the equipment and playing shuttlecock. Musicians with folk instruments entertain as you walk to the Temple, and you will see scores of folks playing cards and visiting with one another. When you finally get to the Temple, you will enjoy its magnificent architecture and colorful designs. You cannot go in, but you can peer through the doorways to see the altars inside.

Situated to south of Beijing's central district is the beautiful Temple of Heaven. This Daoist temple is set on a vast property that is dotted with buildings, shrines, parks, recreation areas, and pedestrian walkways. While it sees millions of visitors a year, there is so much space here that it feels like a moment of quite in the city. Dating back to the early 1400's, this retreat for the Imperil family is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Touristy, yes, but well-worth the visit. The temples here are absolutely beautiful and it's the perfect place to spend a few hours photographing. The complex is rather larger so there is plenty to see and do. We went in the early evening, and it was way less crowded.

I have been to this location twice and each time I am still in awe over the beauty of the temples. This place is different from the temples like the Summer Palace or the Forbidden City because the locals come and participate in the location. I had visited when a choir came and the locals all joined in for singing as well as many elderly playing cards all together. Truly my favorite temple.

Also known as Tiantan Park and the Altar of Heaven, this is a complex of several religious buildings in a park setting. The views from here are wonderful. This is a fantastic place for photos. We saw several brides and grooms posing for formal pictures. Although the park is a gathering place for locals of all ages, you will notice a lot of senior citizens here (exercising, playing card games and relaxing).

Another of Beijing's great Ming Dynasty sites. It is definitely a must see. It is relatively easy to see when combined in a package tour at your hotel, where you can get a guide to explain the history of the location, and transport to the Temple of Heaven as well as to the Summer Palace, Forbidden city and other sites.

Finally, we visited the Temple of Heaven, the largest temple complexes in China and a paradigm of Chinese architectural balance and symbolism. One key element in China's architectural genius was the blending of the monumental with the delicate, and the Temple of Heaven is perhaps the finest expression of this mixing of near opposite. During each winter solstice, the Ming and Qing emperors would perform rites and make sacrifices to Heaven, praying for good harvest for their empire. The most striking edifice is the "Hall of Prayer of Good Harvests", which according to the emperor's Fengshui masters, is the exact point where Heaven and Earth met. Built in 1420 (without the use of a single nail), this masterpiece of Ming architecture, features triple eaves, dramatically carved marble balustrades, and gorgeous glazed azure roof that symbolizes the color of heaven. This 120-foot-high structure is fixed by four inner pillars representing the seasons, and two sets of 12 columns denote the months and the traditional Chinese division of a day. An impressive feat of architecture and scale, the Temple of Heaven is a sight to behold, and its majesty is without comparison.

Temple of Heaven (Tiantan) is a a Buddhist temple and has become one of the most famous landmarks of Beijing. It is a good place to take pictures and even includes a little bench where tourists can stand and have their picture taken by Tiantan and are petite (like me).

Promoted as an exceptional example of Ming Dynasty architecture, the Temple of Heaven and surrounding park are pretty, and well worth a visit if you're in the city's south-central environs. The unusual triple-stepped central pagoda is one of the only such buildings in the world. May get ridiculously crowded on weekends.
