The Union Oyster House, open to diners since 1826, is the oldest restaurant in the United States. It's located at 41-43 Union Street in Boston, Massachusetts. This building was listed as a National Historic Landmark on May 27, 2003.
I ate here only one time and while the food was good, I did not think it was worth the very expensive prices being charged. It was not really worth the more than 2 hour wait for a table either!
I'd consider the Union Oyster House to be the sort of restaurant to visit only on special occasions. I'm glad that I got to try this place but I don't really think I'll be going back.

Good food but for the price, you can get better elsewhere though you wouldn't be disappointed here. The cornbread became an addiction. Server was lovely but a little forgetful. Overall, go here because it's a historical landmark and to say you did.

Touristy. Skip it in favour of Neptune or Eastern. Or, do it once if you must but limit to like a few oysters and a chowder.

I've been here a couple of times. It's really good food. Only down side is that each time the waiters didn't really come up to us very often or at all even. I always had to wave them down...

America's oldest restaurant, situated next to America's oldest pub - it's between the North End and Fanueil Hall. The food, which you can smell as you walk down the street, is still amazing.

I (we) loved everything. Being from Texas, we have access to Gulf Oysters which are awesome, but that's it, only Gulf Oysters. At the Oyster house, there are MANY varieties which are REALLY awesome as well. I would suggest if you are going for Oyster's only, you have to sit at the Oyster bar, order a dozen, and ask for the sampler (this way you will get at least 1 of each variety they sell). After you eat those and find the oysters you like, order another dozen (or 2 or 3) and get what you like. We LOVED them all and ordered 2 more dozen of the sampler platter again. What we had were sweet, salty and delicious. No cocktail sauce, lemon, hot sauce, horseradish needed, that's how good they were. Also, an Ice Cold Boston microbrew beer is required (of course if you are 21 or over). It just goes really well together with the oysters (just like peanut butter and jelly, and Martin and Lewis). Anyway, enjoy it, you won't be disappointed at all. Oh yeah, one more thing. Idon'tf you do sit at the Oyster bar, enjoy the show of the 2 guys shucking the oysters. They've been there forever. They will tell you some great stories, you just have to ask. We are actually going back to Boston this coming Thursday and we have a reservation for dinner. This time besides oyster's, we're doing dinner and going to get the stuffed lobster (another thing they are famous for), and a bucket of steamers. I can't wait, just 2 more days and we are going to get our GRUB on.

The oldest restaurant not only in Boston but in the entire United States that never changed names or was re-established. That's a pretty awesome title to tote but they also have the most entertaining "bartenders" at the oyster bar. We had so much fun just chatting with the guys at the oyster bar that we ordered more food just to hang around. Not that the food was bad. The oysters we had were good and the clam chowder was not too creamy or watered down but just the right consistency. The highlight of the night was this hug lobster that was in the tank everyone had to take a picture with. I believe it was over 7 lbs and not edible but worth its weight in publicity!

Let's see. Come into Boston. Gotta try some chowda.

Honestly, I don't think it was that great. But, better than anything in Ca (except SF).
So, my guest loves oysters. They shuck their oysters in the open.

Service, for some reason my guest loved our server. Might be the first time hearing a Bostonian accent from someone other than me.
She brought out those wonderful corn bread. She didn't mind bring refilling it several times.

We came for a late lunch. So, the place was pretty empty. Maybe this place is a tourist spot. But, we are tourists. I never ate here when I lived in Boston.

We also got the crab cakes. I normally don't order them. And, if i do order them. I typically don't like them. Maybe I was hungry but I liked them.

We can check off eating at America's oldest continuously operating restaurant.

My quest to search for the best Clam Chowder might be over. (As soon as I said that, someone is going to disagree. There's always a better place somewhere else, isn't it?)

Friend of mine recommended this place and I was glad to have tried it while I was in Boston. The clam chowder was phenomenal. It was creamy and velvety with the perfect mix of clams and potato chucks. Having a cup of such in a chilly winter night was certainly a treat. It was just flawless.

Unfortunately other dishes were less memorable. We had the hot oyster house sampler. Baked Stuffed Cherrystones from the sampler was nice but everything else were just mediocre. Lazy man's lobster was disappointing. The sauce was so overwhelmingly bitter you can barely taste the lobster.

5 stars for the Chowda, 3 stars for other dishes, 3 stars for the service.

We waited a while for the food and our server was not really particularly friendly. The seats and the tables were tiny! I guess people in the old days were really a lot skinnier.

Union Oyster House, described as "America's oldest restaurant," was established in 1826. Think of all the historic people who might've dined here! Located on the Freedom Trail and just a block from Faneuil Hall, it's a place steeped in history. I've not been, but I've heard great things about their clam chowder, and now dining at Union Oyster House is on my list of things to do during my next visit to Boston.

The vibe in Union Oyster house is extremely inviting. If you go, make sure to try the clam chowder - it's out of this world. It's also right on the freedom trail, so it's easily accessible while you're touring.

The Union Oyster House has been at this location since 1826 making it the oldest continuously operated restaurant in the United States. The building itself dates back to the early 1700's. The Union Oyster House is a unique place to have a great meal. This was one of John and Jackie Kennedy's favorite places to eat. And check out the original oyster bar.
