The Museum of Brisbane is hidden away in the City Hall building in the city centre, but it's a real treasure trove of local, city history that gives a fine display of Brisbane's roots and future. The museum plays host to changing exhibitions and art installations too, so check what's on before heading over.
Go up the tower and get a nice 360 degree view of the city center. They often have additional exhibits that vary in quality, some are free whereas others may have an entry fee.
This free museum, located on the third floor of Brisbane's City Hall, houses both permanent and temporary exhibits, and is very approachable. During our recent visit, the two featured exhibits were "Ink Remix" (a temporary show of contemporary art from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) and "100% Brisbane: Everybody has a Story to Tell" (an elaborate, modern, interactive exhibit featuring the lives of 100 people currently living in Brisbane, as well as activities/exhibits related to the history of the area). The museum has a small, but very nice gift shop.
