A great way to spend a Sunday in Buenos Aires. The arts and crafts seem go up and down the road for blocks and blocks! You'll catch street vendors for wares and food, lots of maté drinking happening, and maybe even an impromptu dance party with street drummers. If you hang out until the fair begins to clear, you may witness some tango in Plaza Dorrego. If you're in search of dinner, there are countless eateries in San Telmo itself, or take an evening stroll towards Puerto Madero.

Tucked inside the Feria de Anticuarios (off of Defensa), you'll find tons of fruit and vegetable stands to buy your fresh produce for the day/week. And if you go on Sunday, you can take advantage of the Feria de San Telmo.

The San Telmo fair is all on Defensa and it's every Sunday. You can find items by artisans, clothes, pizza, and see tango dancers, performance artists and bands. If you're religious there are even some churches near the festival if you want to attend a service before, after or during the fair! You can sight-see the fair for free and bargain with vendors, or eat some empanadas or pizza for a reasonable price. Some bars near Defensa even have specials on Sundays that you can take advantage of.

So when one of our Italian friends was at the groceries buying whine for her birthday party, they met two Argentinian guys that kindly helped them pay for the bill – it was a few cents short. As it turned out they were neighbors of ours and, of course, were immediately invited for the party later that same evening. The evening was fantastic, we were drunk, flirting wildly, playing music – the neighbor is a bass player.

It was raining a little and very warm since summers in Buenos Aires can be like that, but that never deters los puerteños from going out. By the end of the night we were best friends and had plans for the next day, and that’s when San Telmo comes in.

Having being in this city for awhile now I’m a little weary of the typical touristic places so I was very happy to see that we ended up in a street in San Telmo that was away from all the crowd and at the same time it was a pleasant barbecue with live music shows with the locals. There was a lot of beer going on and the meat was delicious and very cheap.

But by nightfall, went all the tourists were long gone, that’s when things got interesting. The music became more animated, people started to come and form big circles to dance the beautiful traditional dances. Nothing was planed; this was just one more demonstration of the fun, spontaneous and life loving spirit of people of Buenos Aires.

In total dark the musicians turned on the lights near to the ground and the spectacle of people’s feet, dust and light rain was a magical sight. By late at night the dancing became vigorous as well as the rain and even so no one wanted to leave, we were all mesmerized by the beauty of the professionals now dancing a very fast paced performance.

The Feria de San Telmo was the most fun we had in Buenos Aires, so if you're around on a Sunday, I highly suggest you make your way over to San Telmo! The entire street is lined with vendors, food stalls, live music, tango dancers, etc. There are plenty of the usual kitschy souvenirs for sale, but if you look closely you'll also find handcrafted jewelery from local artisans (many of whom sell on Etsy!), artwork in the form of paintings, photography, housewares, handhewn leather bags, etc.

We were thoroughly impressed by the number of interesting items we came across. Besides the shopping and browsing, we had great fun exploring the cobblestone streets, listening to music, and people watching. Also, don't miss taking a tour of one of the many historic homes in San Telmo, El Zanjon, which was turned into a tenement.

FYI- be aware of pickpockets and keep your belongings close.

Amazing street market. Tons to browse through and a great place to pick up more authentic souvenirs. Be on the look out for Tango dancers and mind your purses and pockets - it's very crowded and I've heard the pick-pockets are very good at their work.

On a Sunday afternoon, when the porteños come out of hiding (after a long night of partying, of course), you will find them strolling down this long strip in San Telmo. Local artists and merchants lay out their wares, and musicians and performers show off their talents. When you need a break from shopping, just duck into a café for espresso or grab a choripan con chimicurri (sausage sandwich) on the go.

No amount of time is enough time to wander the aisles of this feria. Some of my favorite souvenirs from Argentina were found here and the interesting stories and conversations with the sellers and locals added to the experience. Don't forget to get a fresh sqeezed OJ to power you up for the shopping extravaganza!

You'll find every imaginable kind of man-made gizmo and some caged animals that probably shouldn't be for sale, all mingled together on a street overflows with humanity. The day we were there (the street fair is held on Sundays), we walked by a storefront where a man on a chair was playing the accordian and a couple set down their shopping bags and started an impromptu tango. It's pretty evocative of what you'll find in Buenos Aires: music, dance, and a slight air of disarray - all with a Latin flair.
