Thanks to the stunning temples of Angkor, Cambodia is now firmly established on the Southeast Asian tourist trail. Many visitors head straight to the temples, staying in the country just a few days, but those who dig deeper find that Cambodia, with its balmy climate and laid back attitude to life has much more to offer: white-sand beaches and relaxed off-shore islands, forest-clad hills and impenetrable jungle, a dynamic, yet developing, capital and sleepy provincial towns, in many of which colonial houses and shop house terraces are now slowly being restored.

For a small country, Cambodia encompasses a surprisingly diverse range of terrain and scenery. Rice fields may be the typical feature of this predominantly flat and agricultural land, but there are also significant highland areas and 440km of coastline, as well as the massive Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, which dominates the heart of the country. In the east, the mighty Mekong River forms a natural divide, beyond which rise the mountains of Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri, where the last of Cambodia’s jungle can be found. In the southwest, the heavily forested Cardamom Mountains run down to the sea, while parts of the southeast are regularly inundated, as the Mekong and its sister river, the Bassac, overflow their banks.

For all its natural beauty and rich heritage, Cambodia is still probably best known in the West for its suffering at the hands of the fanatical Khmer Rouge, who came to power in the 1970s with a program of mass execution that resulted in the death of a fifth of the population. Their three-year terror was followed by a protracted guerrilla war that ended only in 1997 and left much of the country in ruins. Nowadays, however, Cambodia is at peace, and visitors will find it a safe place to travel.

Though much still has to be done before Cambodia is properly back on its feet, and before most of the population see a substantial improvement in their standard of living, the recovery of the country is largely down to the Cambodians themselves, eternally optimistic, tenacious and tirelessly hospitable.

Cambodia, many of the tourist areas and sights are in the old central city where you may also notice classic French colonial biuildings amongst the Southeast Asian shop houses, Cambodian pagodas and markets. Full of history and Legend. Most famous is Angkor Wat.

The people of Cambodia have suffered through not one but many devastating conflicts throughout their history, but despite centuries of hardships, they continue to spring back to life with verve. In addition to the fabled temples of Angkor, the country is also home to a tropical coastline, a swiftly developing eco-friendly adventurer’s paradise in the mountains, and a capital city in the midst of a culinary and cultural renaissance.

While Thailand and Vietnam get all the Southeast Asian press, the lovely nation of Cambodia often gets overlooked. Few ever go beyond the dark reputation of Phnom Penh's infamous Tuol Sleng prison and the Killing Fields, or 'must-see' reputation of the temples of Angkor in the north. Some travellers even skip the country entirely, choosing to devote more time to its big-name cousins to the east and west. More's the pity, of course, because for all its dark history, Cambodia is twice the "land of smiles" that Thailand is, and infinitely more rewarding than the aggressive tourist treadmill in Vietnam. With lovely beaches in the south, seriously under-rated Khmer cuisine, a cosmopolitan vibe in Phnom Penh, and -- yes -- the world's greatest single collection of temples near the wonderful town of Siem Reap, think twice about how you choose to budget your time in Southeast Asia, and give this wonderful and misunderstood nation a deeper look.

Although I only spent a week in Cambodia, it remains as one of my favorite countries. Genuinely friendly people left a lasting impression on me. And of course the splendor of the temples of Angkor cannot be debated.

Do you remember Tom Raider? This is a remarkable place in Cambodia. This temple is completely full of trees, and their roots seem to eat you alive hahaha. Awesome!

Contemporary Cambodia is the successor state to the mighty Khmer empire, which during the Angkor period (9th to 15th centuries) ruled much of what is now Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The remains of this empire can be seen at the fabled temples of Angkor, monuments unrivalled in scale and grandeur in Southeast Asia. The traveler's first glimpse of Angkor Wat, the ultimate of Khmer genius, is simply staggering and is matched only by a few select spots on earth such as Macchu Picchu or the Taj Mahal.

But behind the brochures just as Angkor is more than its wat, so too is Cambodia much more than its temples. The south coast is ringed by tropical islands with barely a beach hut in sight. The mighty Mekong River cuts through the country and is home to some of the region's last remaining freshwater dolphins near Kratie. And the northeast is a world unto itself, its wild and mountainous landscapes a home for Cambodia's ethnic minorities and shy wildlife.
