Lots of sites and ruins to see around the valley. If you take a full day tour, it should cover most of it. Sacsayhuaman is a must see here!

The Sacred Valley was named from the hippies from the US because they felt sacred energy in this place. Historic ruins here are worth visiting, and you'll see some stunning views the entire way.

Machu Picchu (in hispanicized spelling, Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmatʃu ˈpiktʃu]) or Machu Pikchu (Quechua machu old, old person, pikchu peak; mountain or prominence with a broad base which ends in sharp peaks,[1] "old peak", pronunciation [ˈmɑtʃu ˈpixtʃu]) is a 15th-century Inca site located 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level.[2][3] It is located in the Cusco Region, Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District in Peru.[4] It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Sacred Valley which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cusco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). Often mistakenly referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization.
The Incas built the estate around 1450, but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was unknown to the outside world before being brought to international attention in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of what the structures originally looked like.[5] By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored.[5] The restoration work continues to this day.[6]
Since the site was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period, it is highly significant as a relatively intact cultural site. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.[3] In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Inti Watana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. These are located in what is known by archaeologists as the Sacred District of Machu Picchu.[Wikipedia]
Machu Picchu is vulnerable to threats. While natural phenomena like earthquakes and weather systems can play havoc with access, the site also suffers from the pressures of too many tourists. In addition, preservation of the area's cultural and archaeological heritage is an ongoing concern.

The so called Sacred Valley is the valley of the Urubamba River. It's a fertile land for growing corn, potatoes, quinoa and other crops up to today and it was sacred for the incas. Several groups of people and settlements were established here throughout the years and most of these villages remain to date, sometimes keeping the same farming and living traditions as their ancestors.
To visit the Sacred Valley it's best to get a travel agency to take you. They will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and travel the valley, which ultimately leads to Machu Picchu. Along the valley, they stop in several different villages, like Pisac and Ollantaytambo, lookout points and the llama petting zoo. Some travel agencies will offer you to sleep over in Ollantaytambo to head to Machu Picchu the next morning, which is a great idea. Ollantaytambo was and still is a resting place, the hotels have amazing spas and views of the mountains and there's not much to do in the city. If you stay in Ollantaytambo for the night, relax, enjoy the nature, the quieteness and your hotel.

Besides Machu Picchu, the other ruins in Cusco and Sacred Valley are amazing; the views all around are beautiful; the landscape is very diverse and colorful; the mountains are very impressive; the cloud forest has incredibly green and lush vegetation... It is such a beautiful country!
Color, color, color is everywhere: in the amazing textiles they create, in the clothing that they wear, in the abundant variety of fruits and vegetables, in the brightly colored buildings, in the quilt-like fields and terraces where they grow endless variety of potatoes, corn and grain...

Most of the tourist crowds huddle around Cuzco while waiting for their train or trekking party to depart for Machu Picchu. But you can see ancient Inca ruins, colorful mountain markets and epic Andean scenery just a short bus ride from the city. Rural towns dot the Sacred Valley, but my favorite excursion was to the Inca ruins at Moray, near the salt mines. Ollantaytambo is another peaceful place to explore, once the daily trains between Cuzco and Aguas Calientes have all gone.

Sky scraping valleys, the Urubamba River, corn fields, Inca ruins, charming roadside villages, lush forests, tropical flowers, bright colored textiles. A very memorable journey. Whether it was by train or car, I enjoyed looking out the window, as the trees, people, and places passed by me, full of color and life.

Most visitors to Peru's Sacred Valley are just passing through on their way to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. But visitors should give these ancient, hallowed grounds more than just a quick look. There are underappreciated ruins to discover, ancient Incan architecture to admire and a growing number of outdoor tours and adventures (like horseback riding and mountain bike trails), new restaurants and luxury hotels, all set against the serene backdrop of the Sacred Valley's ancestral beauty.

I am certain it is impossible to capture, both in words and photography, the beauty of the Urubumba Valley. I will try my best, but I strongly encourage you go and see for yourself so you can understand.

After flying into Cusco, the capital of the Incan Empire, I was immediately picked up by my guide Anna and driven down to the Sacred Valley of Urubumba. This is the recommended approach for adjusting to the high altitude. The Valley has many towns significant to both Incan history and modern day, such as Awanacancha and Pisac that are known for their textile techniques and colorful markets.

I began my experience with an exquisite, traditional lunch at the Rancho Wayra, located at the Sol y Luna Spa and Lodge, where I stayed for two nights. While Anna and I feasted on trout, beef heart, potatoes, pork and salad to name a few courses, I witnessed an equestrian exhibition of Paso horses. Though during the show I was quite distracted by the way the clouds rested on the towering, spectacular mountains that embrace the valley. Just when I thought I could not fit another bite, a plate of traditional desserts presented to us. It was a filling and grand welcome.

After lunch we visited the massive fortress of Ollyantaytambo. This was the site of the Inca’s greatest victory against the Spanish during the wars of conquest. The bustling town leads up to a formidable stone structure that climbs huge terraces to a high peak. After stopping to catch my breath several times while climbing the stairway (I blame the altitude, not the desserts), I enjoyed the views of the town and farms far below. This was an incredible introduction to this breathtaking valley, and has me even more excited to experience the famous Machu Picchu.

It is hard to compete with Cusco and Machu Picchu, but the rest of the Sacred Valley should not be overlooked. There is so much culture, natural beauty, and ruins all over the region. Give yourself at least two days to explore it.

Best explored on horseback! You can find a rancher trying to sell you a reasonably priced trip anywhere you start hiking yourself, (oddly enough we found ours next to a tattoo parlor)

Wow what an amazing place, quite close to Cusco & Machu Picchu this sacred valley is quite amazing. When we got here we were very fortunate not to encounter too many other tourists. When we arrived it was quite misty but once the mist disappeared we were enchanted by the beauty & history of this sacred valley. Our local guide was able to explain in depth the history of the valley and how important it was during the Inca Empire, and it really helped us visualise how this would have looked in that bygone era. A must see if you are traveling in this area.

The nearest and probably most well know Inca site around Cusco. Impressive high stones; how did they do it?! I was lucky to sneak in at night, what an amazing adventure and so much better to really feel the place when all is left is only those rocks who have seen so much history….

Stone is a really big theme all around the Inca empire! Saw some of the bigger stones for ancient "construction" in my life.
