This temple is over 100 years and very worth to visit the Guan Yin God. The street there is very busy especially during weekends and school holidays. Dont forget to eat Jalan Pasar's Laksa, it is the best in Malaysia.

Kek Lok Si is a Buddhist temple that is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. This construction of entire complex of temples started in 1890's. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-story pagoda.

Amazing and HUGE temple. We took only half day and was not enought. The place close at 5:30 and entry is free. You will have to pass tunel with many stalls with souvenirs and clothes to get there. Poor turtles squeezed in small area which you can feed and then you will finally get in temple. There is lift to the huge golden statue for 6 RM (return). You can also walk as its really not wo and half km as we got informed :-D

Wrapping up my series of Penang reviews is Kek Lok Si Temple. This Buddhist temple is considered to be the largest in all of Southeast Asia. Having visited this temple in person, I would agree with that statement.

Kek Lok Si Temple is located in Air Itam. It is close by to Air Itam Market which is known for their food stalls and particularly for offering assam laksa. The temple is also close by to Penang Hill so you could visit both spots on the same trip. Given the heat in Penang, I would recommend doing the temple in the morning, lunch at Air Itam Market and visiting Penang Hill in the afternoon.

As you enter the temple complex, you will need to go through a walkway to get up to the main entrance. The walkway is a bit dark so make sure you watch your step. As you head further up, you will come across a number of souvenir shops and vegetarian restaurant. You may also come across a few beggars that sit to the side of the walkway up to the temple.

The temple has a mix of different influences. For instance, there is a large pagoda here that consists of Chinese, Thai and Burmese architectural styles. Inside the temple buildings, you will find many areas of worship full of beautiful Buddhist statues.

Above the temple, you will find a large Kuan Yin statue. To reach it, you need to take a lift up to see it. There is a lift fee of RM 3 each way, so RM 6 roundtrip. After exiting the lift, you will see a park like area here which are full of Chinese zodiac statues (ex. Dog, Pig, Tiger). There is even a large koi pond here with a gazebo above to watch the fish. And as you walk up to the Kuan Yin statue, you will notice the building structure below it has carvings which tell different stories.

If you are visiting Penang, going to Kek Lok Si Temple is an absolute must. I though the temple was the best site that I visited while on the island.

The temple has a wide variety of cultural influences. The giant statue will definitely catch your eye and the rest of the temple complex is worth exploring. When you get a taxi to visit make sure they do you of at the top. This will save you having to go up the stairs.

Kek Lok Si Temple is nice and provides a wonderful look-out view of Penang. The temple itself has a kitschy feel, as if it was newly constructed so some parts don't quite have a lived-in look that makes temples unique and historical.

Kitschy Buddhist temple with lots of shops - nothing really spiritual about it but going up to the tower gives you a great view of Penang.

The main statue of Buddha was way bigger then I had expected and was very impressive. They also have these statues for all the animals of the Chinese zodiac which my friends and I loved. Obviously had to take pictures with our respective statues

The Kek Lok Si Temple is great because of the beautiful views from the top of the temple and because you get to ride a cable car to the top. Some of the statues were a little kitchy looking for my taste, but it was a nice visit.

I took the local bus to Kek Lok Si in the afternoon, about a half hour ride on a brand new airconditioned bus for 2 RM. The bus stop is at the bottom of a covered sidewalk that leads up to the temple. The side walk is lined with souvenir stands that sold the same things you could by in town but more expensive. Once at the temple there is some free rooms to walk through and you get a real nice view of the city of Georgetown. You get a real sense of the actual size of the city. You can take an inclined rail car up to the Kuan Yin (temple of the goddess of mercy) statue or you can walk up the winding road to the right of the temple entrance. This bronze statue is over 30 m tall and is covered by a large roof with 6 or 8 nicely designed pillars. There is also a 6 or 7 story pagoda of the 10,000 buddahs.

On the way out there is a small bridge that leads over an unassuming pond. When you walk over this bridge stop and take a look in the water. There is a very, very large turtle in there that must be over two feet long. As you keep walking there is about a hundred turtles in a pond area to your right.

All in all this was a nice half day trip on a cloudy day and it was nice to take a break from the beach days.

A beautiful, serene series of Buddhist temples overlooking Georgetown from atop a lush mountain. You can take a cable car up to the top and begin exploring the temples from there. If you've made it to Penang, and you should, make sure Kek Lok Si is on your list.
