Let’s see, temples, yoga on the beach, and cheap food, lodging, and massages. Then add an international roster of backpackers, hedonists, and spiritual seekers. It must be Bali, the single most popular destination for Western solo travelers in Indonesia. If you prefer someplace less touristy, take a 25-minute flight to Lombok, an island off the coast of Bali that feels like traveling back in time to 1970s Indonesia.

Kitebeach, Lhoknga on the northwest tip of Sumatra, Indonesia is a perfect location to kitesurf. There is an inside flat water lagoon for beginners and those practicing freestyle riding and world class right hand, left hand and A frame waves at an outside reef for wave riding.

The turquoise blue water is warm all year round so there is no need for wetsuits. It blows with a strong cross onshore wind from May until September around 20 knots from the morning throughout the day finishing with a beautiful sunset section. The beautiful white sandy beach has a friendly atmosphere with wide area for launching and landing and a café to sit at between kiting. Often the welcoming locals are curious about the sport, your background and enjoy taking photographs with you.

Seabreeze Kiteclub offers lessons with a qualified instructor in safe conditions to those wishing to learn this exciting sport and rentals by the hour or by day for experienced riders. Their website is www.seabreezekiteclub.com

It's a HUGE country though spanning 3 time zones and 17 thousand islands. I've personally backpacked Java and Bali, South Sulawesi, and Timor--all beautiful regions with beautiful characteristics of their own. Java is the cheapest but rich in history--cultural, political, spiritual. Bali is more commercial but also has a strong old culture and good for spiritual seekers, art lovers, and ocean lovers. South Sulawesi is very varied--great coasts on both the west and east sides, adrenaline-pumping mountains in the middle peppered with exotic cultures, and the food is delicious too. And Timor is one of the friendliest places you could visit in Indonesia--go surfing in Rote or visit traditionally clad indigenous tribes who still worship ancestral spirits in the forests.

Indonesia is a beautiful country to be discovered, it's very vast, many cultures to be discovered. To be more accurate reviewing Indonesia, I would recommend searching by cities as they have personalized reviews and pictures.

We couldn't agree more with Matthew Crompton. Indonesia has varies tourist destinations. From West to East, from Aceh to Papua. And it's not just Bali. You can find more about Indonesia, the travel and tips, in our website www.jakpost.travel. It's your window to exploring Indonesia!

My lovely country, explore the beautiful natural and cultural that we have, from Aceh, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Jawa, Yogyakarta to Papua. Indonesia is one of the most beautiful countries on earth.

The women are the greatest here also. No Feminazis. I married a local girl in 2003 and never a single fight and also never known her to be in a bad mood or not smiling.

When I was researching my first major country on a year-long Asia trip (that country being Indonesia), I got some bad advice. "Go to Bali!" I was told; "Go to the Gili Islands! They're amazing." What I discovered upon arriving in these places was one of the nastiest, greediest, and most insincere tourist cultures I have ever encountered anywhere. It's almost axiomatic that as soon as a place gets a reputation for being paradise, it goes straight to hell, and that was what I encountered in Indonesia's pre-eminent tourist 'paradises': places poisoned by their popularity to the point where I couldn't wait to get out.

Now, with that out of the way, let's make a joyful observation: Indonesia is NOT Bali. With nearly 20,000 islands scattered across an area equal to the width of the USA, it's a shockingly diverse place, culturally and geographically, and if you've got time on your hands, you'd be foolish to confine yourself to its tourist theme parks, when areas like Flores, Sulawesi, and the Banda Islands (or even Lombok away from the Gilis!) contain some INCREDIBLE natural beauty, and a genuine friendliness that's absent in the rapacious regions of Kuta and Gili T. Get off the tourist trail even a tiny bit, and discover something besides drunk Aussies and overpriced barbeque: you'll be glad you did!
