The Rumeli Fortress sits on a hill on the European side of Istanbul, overlooking the Bosphorus at its narrowest point.

In the movies you see many fortresses and castles, but when you see one in real life that looks like this it is pretty amazing. Built on a steep hillside, it has a bird's eye view of any ships passing by on the Bosphorus. Steep steps and crumbling rock make it a challenging visit for some, but you can also get a nice view of it from the strait.

The walls that are standing today were built by Mehmet 11 in 1452 and was used by the Ottomans to control the strategically vital waterway. After the conquest of Istanbul it was used for customs and as a lookout point. I've only passed it on ferries and seen it from the water so it was never that interesting. But you can visit it by land and it would be worth the trip.

Like the Theodosian Walls, Rumeli Fortress is one of the tangible remnants of Istanbul's history. The fortress was built in 1452 by Mehmet the Conqueror to finally close off Constantinople from Black Sea trade. Equipped with cannons, it blasted the first ship that attempted to run the blockade, in the process earning the nickname "the throat cutter." With the Bosphorus choked off, Mehmet moved on the city the following year.

There are two ways to see the city. You can take a bus to Bebek and walk along the water to see the fortress. Otherwise the best views are obtained from the railing of a Bosphorus ferryboat.

Rumeli Fortress was built at the narrowest part of the Bosphorus on the European shore, in order to control commercial and military traffic in preparation for the siege of Constantinople. A worthwhile visit, but not for the faint hearted, as there are LOTS of steps.

The Rumeli Hisarı is the fortress on European side of Istanbul and located just north of the European Bosphorus. Must be very careful when go to upstairs. The best way to see this fortress might be see on a Bosphorus cruise if you have no time or you don't want to go up.

built in 4 months on a stunning location on the bosphorus with a sister structure on the other side to harass ships in the straits - i hired a cab to take us and bring us back to sultanahmet (2 hr wait) - cost 60TL - lots of steps and great views - but be careful no barriers to save you if you slip !

"Rumelihisarı (Rumelian Castle) is a fortress located in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, Turkey, on a hill at the European side of the Bosphorus. It gives the name of the quarter around it. It was built by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II between 1451 and 1452, before he conquered Constantinople. The three great towers were named after three of Mehmed II's viziers, Sadrazam Çandarlı Halil Pasha, who built the big tower next to the gate, Zağanos Pasha, who built the south tower, and Sarıca Pasha, who built the north tower."

Historical and thrilling place for anyone who loves history and sea. Near here lots of sea food restaurants, coffee shops. But besides, i love walking with freedom through streets and enjoy the silence.

If you visit ıstanbul, you should see rumeli hisari.

As a general rule, you should always check the hours of a landmark before you spend 1.5hrs getting there on public transport. I'm not saying we trekked all the way out here on a Wednesday only to find that Wednesday is the only day it's closed, but you catch my drift.

Anyways, this place is amazing. It's more like a fortified garden than a fortress nowadays. If you want the picnic of a fairy tale, you should get yourself some cheese and bread and fruit and make your way here.

We went right when it opened (9 am), and we were the only people in the place for a solid 30 minutes. Very magical. The views from the fortress walls were incredible and, it felt, private. You're bound to get some profile picture possibilities out of your visit here.

Public transport will take you right to the fortress walls. Don't even worry about it! And you can always ask someone where the h you are or what the h you're doing if you get lost or think you're lost.

Rumeli Hisari is a fortress on the western shore of the Bosphorus, quite a long way from central Istanbul. Only took pictures from the ferry going up to Sariyer.
