In this museum, you can find the history of what was called Batavia (when the Dutch colonization occurred). The museum has been open to the public since 1974. Although the building dates to 1710, it has been renovated frequently since.

Try not to go on weekends to have that serene museum experience. And bring your own sandals. Other than that, the first floor is interesting; second floor more like a furniture store.

Jakarta's old town museum from the Deutsch's era. Full with Jakarta's history. You can also have a relax time at the yard in front of the museum.

It was great to see so many ppl ard the museum, but ironically many are there not to learn n explore the city's history, but for mere hang out. It has become a popular hang out place for the youngs. I wish the city can do more abt preserving the objects in the museum because currently most are in bad condition. Exposed to air, not climate controlled, and some can even be reached and touched by visitors. I would love to see these items preserved and be passed down to generations to come.

Fatahillah Museum, also known as the Jakarta History Museum or the Museum of Batavia is a museum located at Jalan Taman Fatahillah No. 2, West Jakarta with an area of more than 1,300 square meters.
This building used to be a Town Hall (Dutch: Stadhuis) which was built in 1707-1710 by order of the Governor-General Johan van Hoorn. The building resembles the Dam Palace in Amsterdam, consists of the main building with two wings in the east and west as well as sanding buildings used as offices, courtrooms, and underground spaces are used as a prison. On March 30, 1974, this building was inaugurated as Fatahillah Museum.
History
In 1937, Oud Batavia Foundation proposed a plan to establish a museum on the history of Batavia, the foundation was later bought the company warehouse Geo Wehry & Co is located east of the Kali Besar exactly on Jl. No door of the Great Northern. 27 (now Museum Wayang) and rebuild it as Oud Batavia Museum. Old Batavia Museum was opened to the public in 1939.
At the time of independence the museum is transformed into the Old Museum in New York under the auspices of the IFI (Institute of Culture Indonesia) and then in 1968 the Old New York'' Museum'' submitted to the local government of Jakarta. Governor of Jakarta at the time, Ali Sadikin, then inaugurate this building became the Jakarta History Museum on March 30, 1974.
To improve the performance and appearance, the Jakarta History Museum since 1999 determined to make this museum is not just a place to care for, exhibit objects dating from the Batavia, but also must be a better place for all people of Indonesia and foreign, children, people even for adults with disabilities to increase their knowledge and experience and can be enjoyed as a place of recreation. For the Jakarta History Museum seeks to provide information about the history of the city a long way, since prehistoric times to the present in a more recreational. In addition, through the Jakarta History Museum sits a grammar trying to describe "the Jakarta Convention Center For Culture" of the various ethnic groups from both inside and outside Indonesia and the history of the city completely. Jakarta History Museum is also always trying to organize recreational activities that can merangasang for interested visitors to Jakarta and raise awareness of the importance of cultural heritage.
History of House
Jakarta History Museum building was built in 1620 by Governor General Jan Pieterszoon Coen as the second town hall in 1626 (the first town hall was built in 1620 near East Kalibesar). According to historical records, this building is only single-stage and second stage of development carried out later. In 1648 the building condition is very bad. Jakarta is a very unstable ground and the weight of the building causing the building down from the surface of the ground. The easy solution is carried out by the Dutch government is not changing the existing foundation, but to raise the floor about 2 feet (56 cm). According to a report of 5 pieces of cells that are under the building was built in 1649. In 1665 the main building be widened by adding each of the rooms in the East and West. After that some improvements and changes in building stadhuis and prisons continues to be the form that we see today.
Besides being used as stadhuis, the building was also used as the Raad van Justitie'''' (the board of the court). In 1925-1942, the building was used as the Office of the Government of West Java Province in 1942-1945 and are used for the collection of office logistics Dai Nippon. In 1952 this building became the headquarters of the City Military Command (KMK) I, and then converted back into KODIM 0503 West Jakarta. In 1968, the building was handed over to the Government of DKI Jakarta, and was inaugurated into the Jakarta History Museum on March 30, 1974.
Like most of Europe, the courthouse is equipped with a field called'' Stadhuisplein''. According to a painting of the money made by the employee VOC'' 'Johannes Rach "' from'' 'Denmark', 'in the middle of the field there is a fountain which is the only source of water for local communities. The water comes from Pancoran Glodok connected by pipes to the stadhuiplein. In 1972, excavations were held against the field and found foundation fountain complete with pipes. So the historical evidence it can be rebuilt according to Johannes Rach image, then created the fountain in the middle of Fatahillah Park. In 1973 the Government of DKI Jakarta to recreate the park by giving a new name is'' 'Taman Fatahillah "' to commemorate the founding Fatahillah commander of the city.

The former town hall (stadthuis) hosts the Museum Sejarah (History museum) since 1974; it is not a very great museum you would expect in the capital city of Indonesia, it is not a modern museum, but it has a provincial charm and there are few displays and explanations which give you an very good quick insight in the history of Indonesia and Jakarta. You start here from pre-historical times and walk through time in the museum till the days of independence.
