Monas was built in 1961 by the first Indonesian President after Dutch rule. The purpose of the monument is to commemorate the resistance and victory of the Indonesian people against invaders.

Went to this place with my kiddo couple months ago and it was an exciting lesson about Indonesian history for her. She enjoyed a lot as we went to the top of the building and saw Jakarta from above. As long as she's happy, am happy too. :)

Very nice! This large monument is actually a building containing a museum, a view from the top, and an impressive collection of dioramas depicting the history of the area. Be aware that the bathrooms are not western style. This is a popular tourist site for Indonesians as well as visitors from around the world. We met Boy Scout troops, a graduating class of female police cadets from around Indonesia and many Indonesian families while visiting the monument.

There's a museum at the base and it's worth visiting if you're a history junkie. There's an elevator to bring you to the top. The monument itself is okay, but the environment around it is more interesting

The National Monument of Jakarta (and Indonesia). The site is surrounded by park, occassionally various fair and events were held in the area such as night market and running marathon. The base of the monument itself is a museum. Come after the sun sets then you can see the monument light up. A must visit in Jakarta.

Reminds me a bit of the Tower of the Juche Idea in Pyongyang. A big monument with a small museum at the base. The people watching on the grounds is probably more interesting than the sight itself. Worth a stop if you are touring around Merdeka Square.

Known flippantly to the local expats as Sukarno's last erection, this National Monument is worth a quick visit if you happen to be on the Jakarta monument circuit during your visit. It's a good place to meet locals interested in practicing their English too.

The Monas is a central landmark for perhaps not only Jakarta, but for all of Indonesia in its symbolic sign of freedom and independence.

As you can see, this place is THE landmark. All reviewers below already shared their experience and quite true. Just want to add one thing, Soekarno have predilection over women and rumour said that if you look at the golden fire from Istana Merdeka (presidential palace) it shaped like a woman on her knee. But, that's just a rumour ;)

I didn't found anything interesting during my visit. The monument is very wide and large, but the hygiene of this monument is utterly far from clean

This is the national monument and symbol Jakarta so make sure you go check it out when in Jakarta. It a gaint tower with a burning flame on the top. This how President Soekarno honoured the Indonesian people. There is a Museum at the bottom of Monas showing how Indonesia got it`s indepence and also you have to go to the meseum in order to go up to the top of the tower. You also have to pay for that seperate. There is a nice view from the top and definitely worth the visit.

There are a lot of locals who hang out here as the sun was going down. Every once in a while locals would approach us wanting to just practice their english. It was a nice way to meet some of the locals. It really gets nicer as the sun starts to go down and the lights start to turn on.
