Lviv's historic centre is well-deserving of its place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

This is a jewel of a town. Lviv located about thirty miles from the Polish border (it was actually part of Poland years ago) is an extremely well preserved town of cobblestone narrow streets and pastel houses. It also is known for being progressive in the arts and culturally rich - it has a fantastic opera house. The old town is not listed as a UNESCO Heritage site. The statue of the much loved Ukraine poet Taras Shevchenko stands front and center where many people gather.

Considered Ukraine's most elegant city, Lviv is also its most European. A gorgeous ensemble of architectural styles, Lviv's charm lies in its slight romantic decay and artful building details. Less than an hour from the Polish border, Lviv is Ukraine's gateway to Europe and its history and people's mentality have always looked west. The city's UNESCO World Heritage listed center includes a mix of neoclassical architecture upon rococo, baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic styles. There are some museums and sights around, but enjoying Lviv is mostly about strolling its streets and drinking coffee in its cafes or beer in a beer hall. For a superb view above the city, climb the 65-meter high ratusha (town hall) or make the climb up the High Castle Hill for sunset. There is also an up-and-coming beer scene in Lviv, so explore that corner of the city after you've hit the coffee houses.

Substantial city in the western Ukraine. Also spelled Lvov. Historical capital of Gallicia. Have not been back in 20 years, but was impressed when I visited in 1988.

Отличный город. Центр просто захватывает дух. Был там два раза и еще с удовольствием поеду, если подвернется такая возможность.

Lviv hasn't changed very much since World War II, many walls and turn-of-the-century buildings still bear the scars of bullet fire and shells and, in many ways, the older people still haven't forgotten those days either.

At first people can seem unfriendly, unwelcoming and predatory, gouging you on prices in the giant Bazaar (one of the largest in Ukraine, and that's saying something) to not helping with directions. But once you begin to actually listen instead of talk to the people, young and old, you begin to realize that people in Lviv are just incredibly interesting, fun-loving, family-oriented and soccer crazy people who will help you out and welcome you in.
Smiles go a long way and take your time to enjoy all the little sites. The graveyard at the top of the tram line (an extremely cheap ride at the equilvalent of about 15 cents when I went) was one of the highlights of our trip there and you can feel a somber presence there, especially in the fall, as the red and yellow leaves dash about the graves of mostly teenage soldiers from WWII.

Respect the place, respect the people and while you can't expect a place that caters to your every whim you learn that the people and the scenery makes it an enchanting and poignant portrait of the Ukranian people.
