In the heart of Argentina's wine producing region, and at the edge of the Andes. Pretty close to Mt. Aconcagua, South America's tallest peak.Great starting point for arranging hikes into the Andes, or to relax and tour one of the regions many vineyards

Not exactly Mendoza, but SAN RAFAEL, Mendoza, is one of the cities I've enjoyed the most travelling within my country. If you guys are waiting for some outdoor action, this is a must. Great rivers, views and adventure there. Located 1000 km away from Bs As.

Overlooked by the majestic Andes and the awesome Mt Aconcagua, Mendoza is best known as a major centre of viniculture - its Malbecs and Cabernet Sauvignons the toast of the chattering classes. Aside from the vineyards (wineries) there are some outstanding examples of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired villas, reminiscent of the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs. Mendoza is also a popular starting point for the road crossing into Chile: a tortuous climb through the Andes and past Mt Aconcagua, then perilous hairpin bends all the way down as you descend into the vineyards on the outskirts of Santiago.

I have to admit: the city of Mendoza was not my real focus. I just used it as a starting point to visit the nearby Lujan de Cuyo, Maipu, and Uco Valley wine regions. The city is surrounded by vineyards, and the Andes in the distance are never far from sight.

Mendoza has it all, if you're looking for a comfortable place to have some peace and silence, this is the place; if you want to try all the delicious Malbec wines while on a bike tour, this is the place, if you want to enjoy extreme sports like skiing or climbing a mountain in the Andes, this is the place; winter is just a great experience in Mendoza, it's not so expensive, the weather is kind, yet wintery, and everyone just have so much fun!

Bike around the Lujan wine valley. Check to see which wineries allow walk-ins and which require reservations.

I LOVE wine! The main purpose of our trip to Argentina was to make it out to Mendoza. My favorite wine happens to be Malbecs.

When I first arrived in the main part of Mendoza I was surprised that it was a busy city. I guess I pictured a quiet town like Napa. I soon realized that the wineries were actually in the countryside of Mendoza and once I got out of the city, it was a beauty!

Another thing I discovered, wine in Argentina is super cheap. An expensive bottle would cost you US$10. The average bottle is about US$3 and the wine is fantastic. It's not like the cheap bottles they sell in the US. I realize the wines are marked up like crazy by the time they reach the stores in the US. Oh well, there's nothing that can be done about it.

I fell in love with Malbec and red wines here in Mendoza, Argentina's idyllic wine region. The Malbec grape is only grown in a few places, including Argentina and France, so if you're in Argentina, you must have a glass!

Mendoza is near the Andes mountains (just 4 hrs or so, by bus, to get to Santiago de Chile), and has a lot to offer in the form of libations and adventure.

Spend a day biking along one of Mendoza's many vineyard routes. Make stops along the way at various bodegas (vineyards) to take a tour and taste some of their signature vinos. One of my favorites is a small, family-owned vineyard called Familia Di Tommaso. You won't find their wines anywhere else (they don't distribute), so I'd recommend buying a bottle or two before you leave!

It's also worth spending a day hiking and trekking on Aconcagua, which is America's highest peak (second in the world only the Himalayas). It's quite beautiful.

And if you've got an extra day, relax at the Termas de Cacheuta (Spas of Cacheuta). A very family-oriented place, it gets crowded on weekends—but it's located among beautiful mountains and streams and definitely worth the trip.

If there is a heaven (the altitude alone would qualify it) then it would be Mendoza. Where wine, food and outdoor adventure (at the base of the Andes afterall) intersect, my idea of Shangri-la!
