This city is known for their view of the Northern Lights! They have these amazing hot springs (not quite as large as the blue lagoon) that have an amazing view of the craters, volcanic rocks, and the small town. Perfect viewing spot for all things Northern Lights.

Myvatn is an area of active volcanic activity in northern Iceland. The area is fascinating with live bubbling rocks, etc. However, this photo is from the Hverfjall Crater which is not far from Myvatn, The crater which is about 1 km in diameter offers a spectacular view across the dark volcanic landscape. You feel as if you are on the moon. Try to go very early in the day or later, to be alone out there is beautiful and powerful feeling.

Lake Myvatn was like a scene out of this world. Iceland's desolate landscape offers a wide variety of unique scenery. Lake Myvatn was completely calm with "pseudo craters" sporadically placed throughout. I went on a full day tour that departed by air from Reykjavik and was able to see a ton of sights in that one day and relax in a geothermal pool. Highly recommended if you want to experience a truly unique location.

Craters, lava fields, funky lava formations, sulphur springs, About 400 people live in this town. The lake is home to a wide variety of bird and marine life. There are wonder baths. Hotels and lodges here are fairly spartan, but inexpensive and the staff are friendly.

Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters). The effluent river Laxá is known for its rich fishing for Brown Trout and Atlantic Salmon.

The name of the lake (Icelandic mý ("midge") and vatn ("lake"); the lake of midges) comes from the huge numbers of flies (midges) to be found there in the summer.

I had a great time during my week in the Greater Myvatn area. I swam in a thermal springs cave, saw funky lava formations, hiked within volcano craters, stayed at the Krafla geothermal Power Plant, viewed lots of cool birds, and experienced geothermal wonders. It is quite a "hike" from Reykjavik, but is a shorter drive from Akureyri (after flying up). Even counting the Summer Tourists, there aren't a lot of people up here and that's good. Folks were also friendly, the food was very good, and the bugs were tolerable.

I visited Myvatn in November 2012 - wintertime - and it was like a thick white blanket had fallen over it. It was amazing! I also ended up at the Game of Thrones base camp and met some of the crew while they were filming Season 3 there (though I've never watched the series) - we stayed at the same hotel. I was told that the best thing about visiting in the winter is the absence of flies, which are apparently annoyingly abundant in the summertime!

Lots to do and see in this part of the country, but it is a long jaunt from Reykjavik.
