What I like best about this place is that it's almost interactive - you can actually walk through the lava stacks and closely see how they were formed and how they stand today. The walking path itself is a good size and easily accessible, and we probably stayed here a little over an hour exploring.

No matter where you go in Iceland, you are constantly reminded that the island exists because of volcanos. Dimmuborgir is a bizarre element of that history. There's a walkway through the area and it's obvious why so many stories cropped up about it.

A paved waking path cuts through this network of collapsed lava tubes, making it an easy stroll. There are some spots where you can climb up into the rocks and explore further, but for the most part, this is a pretty flat and somewhat repetitive terrain.

This place was a lot cooler than I expected! There's these paths you can walk around this vast canyon of giant rocks, there's holes in the rocks where "Yule people" are living in

12/2014 UPDATE

I returned to Dimmuborgir in the Winter and on a day where Gayle and I happened on a Yule Lad. We had to schlep through the snow to get there, but it was well worth it to see the magic twinkle in the childrens' eyes and a chance to hang out and pose with Kjötkrókur (aka Meat Hook). He has a long stick with a hook to put down the chimneys to get the smoked meat. He was also a great guy. My only regret was not staying in the area a few more days to catch the Yule Lads annual dip at the Lake Myvatn Nature Baths.

Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities" or forts) is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Mývatn and just South of the Reykjahlíð Town Site.

The ancient lava flow surface remains partly intact around the Dimmuborgir area, so that the Dimmuborgir itself sits below the surrounding surface area. The area is characterised by large hollow cell- or chamber-like structures formed around bubbles of vapour, and some dramatically standing lava pillars. Several of the chambers and pillar bases are large enough to house humans, giving rise to the term "castles" (borgir). It's all fairly dramatic and fun to walk around and explore.

There is also a nice gift shop and a tempting restaurant on the premises. This was a popular stop for our Earthwatch Group when we were recently in the area.

In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions. In Nordic Christian lore, it is also said that Dimmuborgir is the place where Satan landed when he was cast from the heavens and created the apparent "Helvetes katakomber" which is Norwegian for "The Catacombs of Hell".

This is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Mývatn in Iceland. It is a nice place for a walk. There is also evidence of the shifting/expansion of the plates under Iceland.

This is a large area of oddly shaped lava fields. If you are in the Myvatn lake area, it's worth visiting just to see these strange lava sculptures. The detour from the main road to/from Akureyri is around 2 km.
