This was the hike that prepared us for Machu Picchu... Climbing all the way to the top to see the beautiful view and come back down.

This is where our Machu Picchu trekking tour stopped for breakfast on the first day. Ollantaytambo has lots of history as the king there was fighting the Spaniards here in this valley. If you have time, stay here 1 or 2 nights and explore the area and its interesting hillside hikes.

Towering above the small Inca village of Ollantaytambo are the Inca ruins of the same name. The most impressive bit, the Temple of the Sun at the top, was still under construction when the Spanish arrived. It is considered a masterpiece of Inca stonework. You'll understand why when you see these massive monoliths of pink rhyolite fitting together perfectly. The terraces leading up to the Temple are also impressive, but their foundation is believed to pre pre-Inca. To add to this is a splendid view over Ollantayambo village and up the Sacred Valley

One of the most stunning Inca sites in the Sacred Valley. This tiered Inca ruin is located next to the quaint Ollantaytambo village. At the top, it overs an incredible view of the valley and the surrounding imposing mountains. The Sun temple at the top was never completed before the site was abandoned. This is also the where the Inca won their last battle against the Spanish.

One of the best sites I've visited in Peru. This site is big, and it offers a great view of the town because of its location. The Sun Temple is quite interesting. It's facing the direction of east, and you can still see some remainder of art work on the rock. How they moved these big size of stones, we can't tell.

Stopped by on our way to Machu Picchu, and it was a delightful surprise. It almost looks like a pyramid when you are standing at the bottom and looking up. The grain storehouses on the opposite mountain are mysterious, and the views from the top are stupendous. Definitely worth a visit to this wonderful little town.

Ollantaytambo was a pre inca political, administrative and religious center. It was conquered by Inca Pachacutec and revamped. Ollantaytambo means Ollantay's passageway. Ollantay was a general who fell in love with Pachacutec's daughter but wasn't noble to marry her. Ollantay then takes refuge at Ollantaytambo. This was a passage point between the jungle and the mountains and consists of several terraces for agriculture and a religious temple for the sun. Across the valley, there is another such construction and beside it, on the big rock, you can spot the face of an inca man, sculpted by nature.

If I were to do my trip all over again, I would have spent a night in this quaint little town. Home to an Incan archaeological sight, the town has attractive cafes, lovely views of the valley, and just enough to keep you busy at a slow pace for a day or two. Tourists certainly stop here but it isn't nearly as crowded as other spots.

Spectacular Incan Fortress nestled in the urubamba river valley and about half way between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Next to Machu Picchu this is probably the most impressive Incan ruins. The agricultral terraces are impressive, as are the storehouses, which are precariously located on the surrounding mountain faces.

A great little town. Spend a night under its yellow street lights, you won´t regret it. Also, if you ever have the chance, participate in their "Fiesta de Reyes" celebrations (January).

Most people visit Ollantaytambo for a few hours as part of a day tour of the Sacred Valley. I'm guilty of the same, but I wish we'd spent a night or two here rather than in Cusco. It's a beautiful Incan town with some really interesting ruins. Besides that, there are some really cute places to stay and some nice cafes and restaurants too. Definitely worth stopping over to enjoy for a little longer.

If I were going back to Maccu Picchu, I would spend less time in Cusco and make Ollantaytambo my home base. It's a beautiful little town, with winding stone alleyways and surprisingly few tourists. The ruins are nice and definitely worth a visit, but if you want to slow down and experience life in Peru, spend time in the old part of the town. It's beautiful.

If you take the train from Cusco to to Machu Picchu it stops in Ollantaytambo. Spend some time there and see the ruins...just walk up hill from the train station. In the far corner of the plaza is a surprisingly great little cafe run by a British woman who donates all the profits to local children. What a surprise to find excellent banoffy pie in Peru!
