Be prepared to be immersed in the details of one of humanity's greatest tragedies at this site. It's impossible not to be deeply moved by all the suffering and the lives lost here.
You can easily hire a tuk tuk to take you as it's just a bit outside of town.

This place is very touching. It cost 6$ to get in including a very useful audio guide to understand the history of Cambodia. It is peaceful although its story is incredibly sad.
It is a little far away, many tuk-tuks offer to take you and wait for you there, if you are on a budget I recommend renting a motorbike.

A really chilling experience, but one that needs to be had. This is a reminder of all those killed by Pol Pot during his regime. It's really hard to imagine the brutality that happened here but when you see all the tattered clothes and shoes of children, it really becomes real. I know visiting places like this isn't for everyone, but I highly recommend making the visit.

This is also known as Toul Sieng Museum - which is displays items of the inhuman acts of Pol Pot. Very terrible and cruel to all the doctors, professors, teachers, headmaster, headmistress, singers and more...

Choeung Ek is a very sobering place. Not for those with a weak stomach. There are spots where bones still come up after the rain, and it's not uncommon to find pieces of clothing on the ground either. I think it's important to understand the history here, but it is hard to see.

One of the main reasons to come to Phnom Penh. I certainly didn't "love it" but you can't help but be moved by a visit. A striking reminder of Cambodia's dark history but hopefully a symbol / reminder that prevents a similar tragedy from ever happening again. An absolute must-see.

The Killing Fields are dark tourism at its best (or is that at its worst?). Either way, walking the grounds where the Khmer Rouge did their worst, will leave a haunting imprint on your soul. Darkest of all is the killing tree where enemies (and their offspring) of Brother Number One Pol Pot had their brains bashed in. Absolutely heartwrenching.

The Killing Fields is not an easy, leisurely site to visit. A glass tower filled with human skulls sits in the center of the field while paths are designated to indicate where and how people were killed. It's haunting, jarring, and unbelievably sad. However, to remotely understand Cambodia's recent history, one should make a visit to Choeung Ek.

We spent the day in PP visiting the famous killing fields and S-21 prison. Both places we're very sad but also great experiences. I didn't know much about what had happened before we visited and now I can't believe that something like this could happen and not even very long ago. This is def a must-do if you're in PP. We hired a tuk tuk driver to take us to both for 12 (for 2ppl). We thought this was fair as it took more than half a day and the killing fields were pretty far.

It really helps bring home how recent the country's tumultous history is and some of the scale of the atrocities.

If you mention Cambodia to any student of modern history they'll immediately bring up the The Khmer Rouge Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. This is essentially the Auschwitz of Southeast Asia, where tens of thousands of Cambodians were tortured and killed by the Communist government party, the Khmer Rouge.

There is a school in Phnom Penh where people were interrogated, tortured and detained. Then there are the killing fields located about 3 miles from the city center. Take a tuk-tuk. The place has an eerie and solemn feeling to it, something similar to the feeling non-Jewish people must feel like when they visit a place like Auschwitz in Poland. Just seeing the piles of skulls can be a chilling visual.

It is hard to say "Loved it" or "Hated it" about a place like this. Obviously it is a place where a lot of sadness and despair occurred. Having said that, if you are visiting Cambodia and you really want to get a feel for the atrocities that Cambodians went through, you need to visit Choeung Ek. Words can't describe the feeling of being there. This is one place I will never forget.

While I feel fairly awkward about rating a genocide memorial, the five stars here just mean that it's a crucial part of any trip to Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge's reign wasn't all that long ago - many Khmer Rouge are still living here and pretend nothing ever happened - and its horrible legacy still affects the population today. It will make for a very somber, difficult afternoon, but you just can't fully appreciate what the country emerged from in the 1970's without seeing it for yourself. Unlike most Holocaust memorials, for example, the Killing Fields aren't preserved behind glass. There's really no separation between you and the history - you can literally see bone fragments in the tall grass you walk through. The Tuol Sleng school-turned-prison is also an essential place to visit to fully understand Cambodia's not-so-distant history with the Khmer Rouge.

This is a chilling and important monument honoring those killed by Pol Pot during his regime. The central monument lets you look through glass to see piles nearly a hundred feet tall of human skulls. Very powerful and definitely a must do in Phnom Penh

This memorial built to remember the victims of the Ultra Khmer Rouge Regime crimes during 1975-1979 is home to over 20,000 souls. Onsite, to explore is a huge pile of skulls and mass graves where several annotations explain the motifs. In many ways, the setting allows most of us to realize that life continues on, beyond our safe worlds! The site is just about 30mins outside Phnom Penh, a great tuk-tuk ride!
