This is the largest population center in the Galapagos but with only 12,000 residents it still feels like a small town. Tourism is clearly central here, but the town has a great feeling of community with weekly cookouts and local performances. If you're planning a land-based trip to the Galapagos, this is a great base!

It's a tourist town, and the main town in the Galapagos islands--and it's a charming little place where a lot of locals live. The main tourist attractions including hotels, restaurants and shops are near the harbor. However, take a walk up the hill behind town and you'll find the authentic purveyors of local goods and services. Definitely worth a day or two as an alternative to Quito.

As THE major town of all of Galapagos islands, Puerto Ayora is truly bustling with over half of the Galapagos residents and ever revolving tourists sharing its easy to find and navigate streets. There are numerous souvenir shops, tour operators and restaurants that line the main street. Our featured attractions were the post office and local grocery store where we were able to send our postcards and purchase some local snacks/drinks at very reasonable prices.
