The community is famous for having been the site of the clip "They Don't Care About Us" by Michael Jackson in 1996. At that time, the video crew had to ask permission to the local chief of drug
trafficking, Márcio de Oliveira Amaro. Almost ten years later, Márcio helped write the book Abused - by the journalist Caco Barcellos, which tells a little of the history of Santa Marta. In Santa Marta, is located samba school Mocidade Unida of Santa Marta. On May 29, 2008, was inaugurated an incline linking the top and bottom of the favela. The township is currently occupied by the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, where they settled on 28 November 2008, the first Police Pacification Unit of the city. According to the Department of Public Safety of the State, the points of sale of drugs that worked at that place were then extinguished. On June 26, 2010, a year after the death of Michael Jackson, was unveiled a statue in his honor in the slum. The place chosen for the statue was the slab where he had recorded his video, fourteen years before. The slum is nowadays safe and receive hundreds of tourists every year to appreciate the Favela Paint, a project of two dutch guys to bring life to the community after the pacification. From the top we can appreciate an awesome view of the city. There's now happiness and so much life, in the best of the Brazilian style.
