This is a very yuppy high end mall mostly with the trendiest popular name brands. There is though an Old Navy that I like to go to. Still, the reason why I usually come here is not to shop but to eat. My boyfriend and I frequently eat at the BJs Brewhouse there. I do not recall if the Barnes and Nobles is still at this shopping center. It seems at many malls throughout the Bay Area, this book store has sadly not done well financially and so closed. I hope it does not go bankrupt like the Borders Bookstore franchise did.
GameStop for video games, Barnes & Noble for books, Starbucks for coffee, Century for movies, BJ's and Hooters for food and drinks, and Target for everything else... This mall has it all! Also gotta mention Classic Materials Sports & Collectibles for all the cool collectible stuff.
The Shops at Tanforan have really come a long way in the past few years. I visited for the first time in a year a few days ago and was blown away by how big the mall is. With a Century Theatres, Target and numerous restaurants, there are plenty of reasons to stop in here.
Super close (less than mile from our property). Great mall, good food court and a couple good restaurants.
It is important to understand the history of this place, Tanforan. It used to be a Racetrack for horses in the early 20th century.
However, during World War II, and the passing of Executive Order 9066 by FDR, Japanese Americans and others of Japanese ancestry from San Francisco and the surrounding area were brought here as a staging area, in the horse stalls, before being sent off further inland to the desolate iternment camps where all of Japanese ancestry were sent after the hysteria of Pearl Harbor.
Those families were allowed to bring only what they could carry, usually a suitcase. They lost everything, their businesses, their jobs, their property, their possessions, and sat in camps for years, except those who signed up for the Army's 442 battalion, the all Japanese battalion fighting in Europe that was the most decorated one in the entire WWII. They were brave and full of valor, but took heavy casualties, making the ultimate sacrifice despite having their loved ones locked up like the enemy in concentration camps and considered un-American, even though most were U.S. citizens.
Years ago, I used to live in San Bruno and work in South City.
Tanforan was sliding downhill from its HeyDey openings decades ago into an ethnic ghetto punk hangout, with stores closing up and empty places for rent.
It sure has changed from 15 years ago! With the recent remodel and upgrades, it is a decent mall once again, with nice shops, a lot of carts and kiosks in the walkway (so many, it is hard to get around without expert navigation skills), and a pretty decent food court and eating options. The theaters have been upscaled too, from the days when they had cheapo matinees as the only thing people would come here and watch. I would always go to the CIty or down the Peninsula for flicks back then.
And BART's San Bruno station conveniently is connected right next to the mall!
Now it has been spruced up and it is very busy on a Saturday afternoon.
But remember what it used to be, before it was a shopping mall. And ask yourself if that is the type of legacy you are proud of as an American, to lock up an ethnic group en masse. Then look around you at the hysteria surrounding hispanic illiegal aliens, and Muslims, and LGBTs.
Before you go trying to change the Constitution by repealing the 14th amendment, or reducing "Equal Protection under the law" in it somehow, consider what the populous majority did in the past and, understand why our founding fathers put in checks and balances to protect the un-alienable rights of the minority.
Learn from history, or your fate will be to repeat it.
This place is right in front of my new home. I love it. Its convenient and has everything i need.
Like everyone else this place got a lil plastic surgery done yet still is lacking though. The new entrance is pretty looking but that's about it. For me the biggest draw is Barnes, target, and BJ's. Yeah, I know, out of the whole place those are the only reasons I go there - not to mention I used to live across the street at the time. Eric E. is another person who appreciates cinnabon. See, there are not enough branches in the bay area...oh well.
Not to mislead anyone - but I had heard that they are putting in a Dave N Busters - I think it's a lie but who knows???
