A must if you have out of town guests. Or maybe you just want to go to happy hour with friends.
Mai Tais and Dancing during a Polynesian Rain - What's not to love? This is a classic San Francisco spot in the fabled Fairmont Hotoel
This palace of kitsch is great fun. Grab a fruity Tiki-themed cocktail, sit back, relax and watch the indoor rain and lightening show or a cheezy cover band. The food is solid, if unexceptional, but this place is great fun if you are in the right mood for it. A San Francisco institution.
Absolutely touristy but yet absolutely fun. Tomga Room is a Sam Franisco institution!
Just after opening is the time to go with children. Had a great time with my daughter. Several other kids were enjoying the atmosphere as well. Request a table and order some fancy, delicious, over-priced drinks with a light snack. Service is slow but you're here to relax and chat. Bar area is standing room only.
Totally touristy, but a lot of fun! Reservations are needed, so book ahead. No reservations Stop by for a drink at the bar and watch the band on the boat while the waterfalls happen.
Definitely come and experience this tiki bar at least once, located in the basement of the Fairmont Hotel.
Come for the fun cocktails and listen to the cheesy music by the band playing in the floating pagoda like stage.
The food is pretty sub par.
Overall, a fun unique time though.
Small cover charge is waived for guests of the hotel.
This is a fun and lively place to eat dinner and be entertained at the base of the Fairmont Hotel in Nob Hill. The ambiance is unique, the live music was really fun, and the food was Hawaiian.
Classic SF! A little on the side of over the top, but it has a fantastic tiki bar feel to it. Great place to get your fill of little umbrella drinks. It's also has a band that plays everything from oldies to top 40, and there's a dance floor so you can bust a move if you want.
Hmmmmm. I honestly don't know what to think about this tiki bar where it rains over the pool, with an island where a band plays, in the basement of this fancy hotel. It's strange. You will love it or hate it. I'm on the fence, but I will go back and give it another try because the drinks were great.
An over the top tiki bar in the middle of a posh hotel brings young and old together in a festive setting. Be careful how many bowls of rum punch you order. Our night ended early after one too many. The Mahi Mahi was excellent, but the calamari and forbidden rice was below par.
I love any kind of Tiki themed bar, and this one is so over the top in the best way possible. the simulated thunderstorms, the goofy cocktails, the lux, cheesy ambiance. it's truly the living end.
Try to weasel your way out of paying the music cover because once you're in, it's scorpion bowls and dancing galore!
Tonga Room is beautiful indeed. The indoor pool with a center gazebo along with the band is pretty darn cool. They even have artificial rain that comes down every so often, giving the place a tropical feel.
The website says that we had to pay a cover to get in but we went on a weekday and since it was quiet, we walked right in. We only went to the bar area for drinks.
The drinks are very expensive for their small sizes. I tried 3 different drinks and didn't quite care for any of them. The bartenders are very nice though and the service was fairly prompt.
I probably wouldn't come back here again on my next visit but if you haven't been, the decor of the restaurant is great for a photo op with your friends.
I can only grade the bar since we only came here for cocktails. We got:
Pineapple Royale $13 - Aged rum, brandy, Cointreau, and fresh pineapple juice
Smugglers Golden Punch Bowl $34 - White rum, yellow chartreuse, lemon juice, honey, ginger & bitters
You're paying more for the ambiance, because in the middle of the restaurant, is a square pool where the live band plays from in a covered island. Around the square pool there's "rain" that periodically falls, along with some lightning effects. It's really a cool place to check out at least once :)
Their live music prompts cute old couples to get up and dance but the food is Asian Fusion, so the crowd is a mixed range. The drinks were overpriced but at least they were strong.
I probably wouldn't come here for food though, but just as a bar stop for the ambiance. :)
I don't think this will become a regular drinking place on my list, but it's a place everyone has to visit once. Definitely a staple of SF culture. Highly recommend getting the lava bowl, just be careful!
The Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar is a restaurant and tiki bar on the basement level inside the Fairmont Hotel just up the street. It is the oldest tiki bar of its kind in the U.S since 1945. They have a great buffet on weekday nights and the theme is like walking into a old Hollywood set of yesteryear.
Haven't been here in a while but remember always having a good time when I went as a kid. Great place for families to have a nice and entertaining dinner
This will be my first and last time here.
1) Food was subpar. Not worth mentioning.
2) Delicious cocktails concoction, but overpriced.
3) Extremely slow service
This place was not my cup of tea. I liked the ambiance, live music, and decor but nothing made this place worth coming back. I blamed Anthony Bourdain for making this place seem so magically amazing...
Obviously had to come here because the Bachelor made it look so awesome! Plus it's located in the Fairmont! How could you not at least drop by???
We ordered the HUGE punch bowl and shared it among the three of us. Man that is a lot of liquor for one person.
I really want to come and try the one in the pineapple next time!
Cute spot to gather with a small group of friends to gossip.
