Nice place to stay at.
Small hotel rooms. Very traditional building (old). Thin walls. I think it's a good place to stay at if you wanna be somewhere in Downtown.
Hotel Union Square is what you call “in the middle of the action” for better or worse. It’s right in the shopping district steps from the Powell Street MUNI/BART stop and by Union Square. This can mean it’s loud and crowded, but right in the center for downtown. The well known Powell Streetcar goes right in front of it and it’s last stop is next to the hotel. The rooms are pretty small, though the concierge told me that King Bed rooms are larger. It’s an old looking building (it’s been a hotel since 1902), with exposed brick walls, but the upkeep is great. The vibe is relaxed with a dark grey, black, navy kind of aesthetic, but makes it feel a little dark, but it is a beautiful building. In the lobby there are black and white movies playing on silent, and it’s surprisingly quiet for being right off a busy street. There is plenty to eat nearby and right downstairs is Tad’s Steakhouse.
Location, location, location!!! If being in the heart of the city is your thing, look no further. This hotel is right on Powell Street, steps away from Union Square (the main plaza in San Francisco), surrounded by shops and restaurants, and one block away from Powell BART (train) station. The location is very convenient, most places worth seeing downtown are within walking distance, and the famous Cable Car stops right in front.
This place feels modern and has a chic atmosphere. Once inside, the noise of the busy street seems to disappear, and you can enjoy the ambiance and the cute courtyard they have in the center of the building. At 5pm there was wine and live music in the lobby, perfect to unwind after a full day exploring San Francisco.
The Hotel Union Square describes itself as San Francisco's first boutique hotel, and it certain has an old-school boutique feel. The hotel itself is 103 years old. The hotel is sisters with Hotel Diva, another chic SF hotel in Union Square. One downside to its amazing location near Union Square is that parking costs an additional $45-51 per night. They also offer the standard package of amenities (safe, hairdryers, wifi, toiletries, coffee and tea), but do not offer breakfast. They also partner with Tad's Steakhouse to provide room service. In addition, the concierge was very friendly and helpful.
Went to SF for a business trip and ended up here. SUPER convenient location and cool perks like wine hour and coffee/tea in the lobby. They even have SF Giants themed rooms :)
I liked how they provide makeup remover towelettes, don't see that very often at hotels. The only complaint is that it can get noisy (outside noise from being right in downtown and I was at the corner room) so may be advisable to bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.
