Sardinia is a large Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. It has nearly 2,000km of coastline, sandy beaches and a mountainous interior crossed with hiking trails. Its rugged landscape is dotted with thousands of nuraghi – mysterious Bronze Age stone ruins shaped like beehives

The sea, the people, the land and history and the climate all make Sardinia alluring to travelers from D.H. Lawrence to Madona. This large island was occupied by the Phoenicians, Romans, Catalans,
and it's own indigenous iron-age cultures. You can kayak, sail, surf, hike, cycle, and motor around the island. It offers quiet lagoons, urban cultural centers.

I went to Sardinia during the off-season and at first it was rather annoying searching for restaurants and activities to do. After a day, I realized it was a treat to be on the island without tons of tourists. The Sardinian coastline is amazing, but don't be afraid to venture off into the countryside. I never knew which way to turn my head as every angle was breathtaking. I'd advise you to rent a car for a few days to get to the more remote scenic spots on the island. There are an endless amount of coves, caves, beaches and colorful towns. I loved it!

Surrounded by pristine waters, Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is a region of Italy. The island is breathtakingly beautiful, offers kaleidoscopic sights and its Costa Smeralda, once a favourite of the late Lady Di, is a top holiday location for celebrities.
Top things to do:
Visit the capital, Cagliari. It has inspired many writers and displays a rare, unusual beauty.
A trip to The Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago della Maddalena, archipelago of stunning island, is a must.
If you enjoy horse riding, you will love the organised treks in San Teodoro. The tour takes you around the lagoons and you can also see dolphins playing.
Go sailing on the Costa Smeralda. The windy beaches of Porto Pollo are perfect for surfing enthusiasts .

I spent my honeymoon in Sardinia..and it is the perfect place for that and then some! Really what a fascinating place. History buffs will revel in the battles that have been fought by this island of independantists...inland you will see graffiti from the revolutionaries from the 1980s. There is an on going battle between Corsica and Sardinia.

Great food. Super hiking. Beautiful beaches. Crystle blue water. Fantastic for sailing.

Stick with either the northwest - Porto Cervo/Costa Smerlada region or head down south to Cagliari or Carbonia. Avoid Alghero - it's "budget" in the bad sense of the word.

Costa Smeralda is insanely expensive and totally over the top. The Aga Kahn funded the development of this area several decades ago and since then the super yachts have found their home here. It's definitely worth splurging to experience this scene if you have the spare cash.
