Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex

Amongst the many sights at and around the Shimla Ridge, the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex occupies a rather charming place. With its pretty gothic style architecture (built in 1887), it houses the legendary Gaiety theatre. There’s an art gallery, ballroom, exhibition hall and amphitheatre too. It’s the hub of cultural activities in Himachal Pradesh and worth a visit.

This lovely theatre dates back to 1877 and has recently been renovated. I remember it being featured on Michael Palin's Himalaya series and I had wanted to visit ever since. I did a tour conducted by the knowledgeable Mr Gautam and it provided a fascinating historical insight. Plays are still performed in both Hindi and English. It is worth checking the program to see what is on whilst you are in town.
