Great location - a few blocks from the DuPont Circle Metro station, and the front desk staff was very nice. The room was small, but modern, clean, and well-designed. The only issue that comes into play is the bathroom, if you're not staying alone in the room: The door to the bathroom is frosted glass, and doesn't lock, so you have a little less privacy than you'd like (unless you've lived for 20 years with the person you're staying with). You can see silhouettes and hear sounds, so not ideal. Also, the glass door on the shower is a half door, which is kind of stupid, in terms of water spilling out. But the soaps and shower gels and shampoos are very nice:-) Got a great deal on Hotwire. Incidentally, you may see some reviews talking about "Suites," but I believe this was before a recent renovation. The rooms are quite small, now.
The Carlyle was just renovated and now is under Kimpton's management. The hotel's design is on point--especially the beautiful restaurant and bar--and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The Carlyle is just a few blocks away from Dupont Circle and a short walk to U Street, which means there are lots of great restaurants, shops, and bars to explore during your stay.
I stayed here once years ago for a week with a friend for a conference. Even though we didn't use it much it was great to have the kitchenette in the room. The room itself was quite nice and spacious with a nice bathroom with a big fancy shower. I also like the location out by Dupont Circle, more of a young, hip crowd with some pretty cool cafes and restaurants.
I love the funky, art deco look of this hotel. Everything from the lettering on the outside, to the chairs and telephone in the lobby, to the elevators are in the style. The restaurant, Twist Dupont,is colorful and fun.
Since the rooms are suites, some stay for longer terms. I spoke with an airline steward who calls it home three or four nights a week. The hotel's guests range from international visitors in town for a while to families who like the suites arrangement.
The pricing is largely dependent on the demand in town. It can be less expensive in the slower winter months and on weekends.
Since this is a suites hotel, it's a great choice if you want more space and don't want to eat every meal out.
The suites are good sized. Some are big enough for families with two beds and a pull out sofa. And the kitchens are stocked with utensils and Keurig coffee makers. There is also a vanity next to the bathroom, making it easier for two people to get ready to leave at once.
If you want to work out, they have an arrangement with a Washington Sports Club on Connecticut Avenue.
