They don’t call Jalan Sosrowijayan as a backpacker’s paradise for nothing. Here, you’ll find narrow alleys teeming with billboards promoting cheap lodgings and budget hotels in Yogyakarta. And, yes, it’s an ideal place if you’re looking for super affordable accommodations in Yogyakarta. As with Bangkok’s Khao San road, the area also has a plethora of food stalls offering cheap yet tasty local dishes. Furthermore, there are shops selling a variety of local products, such as batek.
The two alley ways around Jalan Sosrowijayan make up the backpacker ghetto of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. There are a great deal of family-run guesthouses here along with small hotels. Plenty of food stalls and street carts can be found as well as traveler's cafes. Surprisingly the traveler's cafes are not too expensive, dishing out Indonesian and Western classics for about two bucks a plate. Guesthouses here are also quite reasonable. $10-15 should get you a double room with a fan. Although this is one of the nicest traveler's ghettos I've been, make sure you do get out of this area and explore the other neighborhoods.
