Another very interesting temple complex in Yogyakarta. Built in the 9th century by Hindu settlers.

Another UNESCO World Heritage site. Candi Prambanan is built to dedicate to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). Many of it has turned to ruins. The Prambanan temple compound is a big area to walk. You will need to walk past the souvenir market before you fully exit the compound to the car park.

We were recommended by the hotel reception to hire a car for a few hours but as the hotel transport was fully booked, they assisted to negotiate a 2 hour cab for a price of IDR350k on a Saturday. Entrance fee is USD18 per foreigner adult. That 2 hour which includes our 45 min travel time wasn't enough for me to complete the sight and shopping at the compound.

It's not too far from the airport. Easy to get there but I don't see any cabs where you can easily hitch a ride back. Even if there is, they will prolly charge you at exorbitant rates - demand supply curve. Could only see tour buses. So was pretty glad we hired the car to send us to and fro.

It's quite similar to the temples in Cambodia, so if you've seen those already, I wouldn't extend staying in Yogyakarta just for this.

Prambanan is another UNESCO site in Yogyakarta, about an hours drive away from the city. It is the biggest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and well worth a visit. In my opinion it is best to go before sunset, experience the sunset there, and then head over to the Ramayana theater to enjoy the flood-lit temple from a distance, and perhaps see the Ramayana ballet while you are there.

It's a complex of many mini temples and a handful of main temple rising high. It is mostly known by its legend among Indonesians, involving prince, metaphysical beings, and a princess turned into a rock. It's advised to bring a hat and your own stock of drinking water as the complex is really open and has less shaded areas. A guide is recommended as the story and interpretation of the temple scripts on its wall.

One colossal Hindu temple in Indonesia. Besides its beautiful and distinctive architecture, this temple complex is infamous for its legend, Roro Jonggrang.

Prambanan is a must-see for anyone travelling in Yogyakarta. Most tours offer a day-trip to both Prambanan and Borobudur. Beautiful historic hindu temples that you can climb up to see the statues inside. The park is huge with several other smaller temples nearby that is worth walking to. There is also a small area with deers that you can feed for a small fee. Did not manage to catch the Ramayana Ballet but heard great things about it.

Complex of massive Hindu and Buddhist temple dating from as far back as the 9th century. These impressive temple are best seen in the early morning (open at 6am!) when the light is good for photography and the heat of the day has not set in and the tour bus crowds have not arrived yet. Takes a good two hours to wander around the complex. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is relatively small compared to Borobudur but it is worth going. Unlike Borobudur temple, which is a Buddhist temple, Prambanan is a Hindu temple. Check out the Ramayana Ballet performed in the evening at the temple too.. Hire a guide at the entrance who can explain not only the history of the temple but also the meaning of each carving on the wall.

I loved the Prambanan Temples. The complex is really big, it is not just only the three towers everyone associates it with, but it actually has a lot more temples and a lot of rubble as an earthquake destroyed most of it. They are rebuilding it though.

When you enter the temple complex you will be overwhelmed with men offering themselves as a tour guide in exchange for some money. My experiences with these men, although being incredibly friendly, is that their English isn't good and it can be hard to understand them, which would be a shame if you want to know more about the temples.
Pass these men and walk up further to the main temple. There will be kids asking if they can tell you about the temples so they can practice their English. Really, the practice they really don't need. They speak it very well and with every carving they can tell you whole stories.

A complex of Hindu and Buddhist structures (and quasi-Hindu/Buddhist structures – there’s a certain degree of religious indissociation in the history of central Java), these temples 17km east of Jogjakarta are easily visited as a daytrip, and are a certain highlight of any visit to Java. The towering collection of 8th-century Hindu temples nearest the gates is the primary attraction here, but equally rewarding is the splendid Buddhist Sewu temple at the far north end of the park grounds, which, curiously, few visitors devote much time to. In the morning, you may just have the Sewu temple to yourself – it’s the perfect place to sit alone and contemplate Indonesia’s long and varied cultural history. Trans-Yogya bus #1A runs here from Jalan Malioboro.

The Prambanan Temple Complex is a complex of Hindu temples located in the Yogyakarta Special Region. It consists of 300+ temples in which some are in ruins due to hundreds of years of age and proximity to the Mt. Merapi (an active volcano). Legend has it that the temple complex was a request from a lady requesting to a lover that a 1,000 temples should be made for her-- yet she foiled the plan one temple short of completion, and the man cursed her to be the 1,000th. Yet the real number are much less than 1,000. The three largest temples are dedicated to the 3 highest Hindu gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Who does not know Borobudur? This Buddhist temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 Buddha effigies in its complex. Millions of people are eager to visit this building as one of the World Wonder Heritages. It is not surprising since architecturally and functionally, as the place for Buddhists to say their prayer, Borobudur is attractive.

Borobudur was built by King Samaratungga, one of the kings of Old Mataram Kingdom, the descendant of Sailendra dynasty. Based on Kayumwungan inscription, an Indonesian named Hudaya Kandahjaya revealed that Borobudur was a place for praying that was completed to be built on 26 May 824, almost one hundred years from the time the construction was begun. The name of Borobudur, as some people say, means a mountain having terraces (budhara), while other says that Borobudur means monastery on the high place. (makasih om Yogyes)
