Fin del mundo, principio de todo: the end if the world, the beginning of everything. Ushuaia motto as Southern most city in the world describes its endless appeal
launching pad for trips to Antartica or around the Cape. Otherwise, the city is pretty grubby and lacks much soul or interest. The main drags portend to be tourist havens, but they are tending to be tacky. Restaurants and cafes are not particularly innovative or exciting. There are a few minor tourist attractions in the district, but for the most part it is a useful tactic to keep the visit short and sweet.
This city is, at 55 degrees latitude south, holds the distinction of being “the southern most city in the world.” This is a nice city with lots of restaurants and shops especially if you are looking for outdoor gear. This is the jumping off spot for Antarctic expeditions. We had great weather but it can change very quickly. Free but slow internet at the port. Cash (US$) was received at a better rate than using a credit card.
When I was growing up, my dad used to threaten to send me to Tierra del Fuego when I was misbehaving. So when I called home from Ushuaia on New Years one year, he was not sure whether or not I was joking when I told him I was actually in Tierra del Fuego. Despite the name, there is no fire here. Lots of ice, though. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world and jumping off point to see penguins and gaze south toward Antarctica. You can do a boat tour of the Straights of Magellan and see penguins and glaciers.
