Lovely medieval town center. The Cathedral of Chartres is a spectacular example of Gothic architecture and an UNESCO World Heritage Site
Not far outside of Paris, Chartres is a nice small city with an extraordinary cathedral. Popular day trip option from Paris, easily accessible by regional train.
While the outskirts of Chartres are light industrial and bleary, once you get to the old city on the hill, you're transported to an incredible medieval feast for the senses. The Cathedral, one of the oldest in France, is spectacular with brilliant stained glass and ornate stone carvings. The city has recently cleared an area in front of the Cathedral, much like Notre Dame in Paris, so it's possible to get a grand view of the front. Old Chartres is relatively small and can be wandered easily in a couple of days, but I can't count the number of times we've been there (we became great friends with a number of families 30 years ago--perhaps the most significant experience we've ever had traveling) and we never get bored just wandering. There are excellent restaurants and shops, and, at night, the city puts on an amazing light show. There are also great B&Bs, such as La Maison Allieurs (not sure of spelling) which is just steps from the Cathedral. (I've reviewed it elsewhere.) I can't imagine a trip to France without stopping in Chartres--and would feel that way even without the deep friendships we've made.
City that is a short train ride from Paris, most visited for the magnificent Gothic Cathedral, that contains some of the most impressive stained glass in the world.
